how to set button box submenus?

Question

I was looking for a more organnized hierarchical way to specify button box menus.  I was looking at the axis settings dialog that opens up when the "format" buttonbox is pressed.  Does anyone know how to specify a list or associative array for the button box so that it has hierarchical menus?

It looks like sub menus are (only?) in Outline Box red triangle popups.  Here's the example in the scripting index.

Hi, here is what I was talking about.   This is actually the only button box with submenus that I could find.  It is a modal window so I couldn't grab the list of items attached to it, although I was able to look at the tree structure and the format button is definitely a bonafide button box.
