The graph builder allows you to set a date/time column on the horizontal axis and use the "Date/Time Pin" option in the right-click menu to aggregate data for specified time units and graph the average, maximum, minimum, and sum values. This feature is extremely useful for analyzing time-series data and log data.
However, the available time units are currently limited; for example, after "1 minute," the next option is "1 hour," and after "1 hour," the next option is "1 day (24 hours)." Therefore, it is not possible to aggregate data at arbitrary time intervals that are commonly used in actual work, such as "every 6 hours," "every 12 hours," "every 10 minutes," or "every 15 minutes."
For example, in the analysis of manufacturing equipment and sensor logs, there are frequent situations where it is necessary to check the equipment status in 6-hour intervals or the frequency of anomalies in 10-minute intervals. However, currently, in order to perform such aggregations, it is necessary to create a calculated column in advance, generate columns such as "date and time in 6-hour intervals" and "date and time in 10-minute intervals," and then use that column as the horizontal axis of the graph builder.
While this workaround is possible, it increases the effort required for data preparation and reduces work efficiency because additional columns must be created for each analysis.
What is the improvement you would like to see?
I would like to request a feature in the "Date/Time Pin" section of the Graph Builder that allows users to specify any time interval.
For example, after selecting "minutes," "hours," or "days," you can enter any number.
every 10 minutes
every 15 minutes
every 30 minutes
Every 2 hours
Every 6 hours
Every 12 hours
I would like to be able to perform calculations such as these directly.
This allows you to flexibly change time aggregations within the chart builder using only the original date and time columns, without having to create a calculated column for time delimiters beforehand.
Why is this idea important?
The implementation of this feature will significantly improve the efficiency of time series data analysis.
Currently, you need to create a calculated column if you want to aggregate data at a specific time interval, but this step will be eliminated. Furthermore, if you want to check trends while changing the aggregation granularity (e.g., hourly, six-hour, twelve-hour intervals) during analysis, you will be able to easily switch between these intervals within the graph builder.
In particular, when analyzing manufacturing equipment data, sensor data, and log data, aggregation at a time granularity appropriate to the business is crucial. The ability to directly specify arbitrary time intervals would enable more intuitive and flexible analysis, and we believe this would be a useful feature for many JMP users.
Hello @PowerTreesElk77 , thank you for your request. We are investigating this internally.
