As CEO Jon Weisz mentioned in the 2026 Midyear Company Update, one task assigned to senior staff at its recent retreat was to create a statement outlining what JMP values as a company. The result? A document that expresses the kind of company that JMP aspires to be and what that means for its leaders and all staff.
JMP-logo-vert-blue-black-with-gray-tagline (3).pngThis is how we JMP
At JMP, we believe our corporate culture should embody collaboration and kindness – among ourselves, with JMP users, and with the world at large. While statistical software is at our core, we’ve built our business around people, both by helping scientists and engineers do more with their data and by enabling employees to have fulfilling careers.
Our company
To be a good company, JMP must engender and facilitate trust amongst all stakeholders. Trust leads to realistic expectations, healthy conversations, informed decisions, clarity of mission, creative solutions, and swift actions.
More than just part of our company name, “discovery” is embedded in how we go through the world. Just as we strive to equip our customers with the tools they need to make statistical discoveries, we want our employees to be on their own journeys of discovery to determine the best way to support the company and to grow their professional lives.
JMP is a human-first company that understands that all employees bring their lives and individual stories to work. There is an appreciation of the value of all roles, as well as a culture that allows people to ask for opportunities. Goals and objectives should be met, but not at the expense of people. We remember that the real, overarching goal is to aspire to excellence, not perfection.
Profitability creates a healthy company that, in turn, creates opportunities for people and allows JMP to be extraordinary. By reinvesting profit into its products and people, JMP helps its customers help the world. Simply put, when people are supported, challenged, and appreciated, they thrive. And so does JMP.
Our leadership
To be good leaders, JMP managers, directors, and executives ask questions. They listen to answers. They make decisions fairly and confidently. And they ask: “How can I help you be more effective?” They help employees understand, respect, and follow processes and policies; they are quick to course-correct when someone strays.
JMP leaders are advocates for the product, the company, and its people. They are willing to evolve, since adaptability leads to growth and change, both personally and professionally. They allow themselves to be vulnerable and accept others' vulnerability.
As hybrid work is here to stay – and teams work across vast geographies and various time zones – JMP leaders go the extra mile (or kilometer) to connect with and motivate employees. They build vast networks within the company, which provides a perspective of and appreciation for every business unit.
Our employees
JMP employees tend to be curious, honest, and proactive, adapting as needed and respecting the roles, experiences, and guidance of others. They understand and follow our processes and policies, even as they seek ways to improve the company. They courageously speak their minds – asking big-picture questions – but they do so with kindness and respect.
Individual contributors gain perspective by building networks outside their teams. They make the effort to connect often and early with stakeholders and colleagues.
They accept personal responsibility for their own growth, being true to themselves and to workmates. JMP employees know the difference between doing the right thing and simply doing things right. JMPers are a force for good.
On a foundation of trust, the people of JMP move forward together, building a better future for those who come next.
I was really appreciative that our leadership team was able to discuss this topic at our retreat in Asheville. Our JMP culture is so important and it great that we were able to define it. Culture is most meaningful when employees experience it in their day-to-day interactions. I'm excited about the work underway to strengthen leadership development across JMP and provide leaders with the tools, support, and feedback needed to bring these values to life in a consistent and authentic way. While we recognize there is still work to do, together we can ensure these principles are not only aspirational but lived experiences for our employees.
Thank you to our Leadership team for framing this. JMP is a truly unique and special company. Appreciate the work we do both as a people and as a company to drive our mission of "discovery" forward. With collaboration and kindness for each other and for the customers we serve.
I sincerely thank everyone who participated in drafting this statement.
This statement reaffirms what is most important at JMP as a JMPer.
It also serves to make it clearer what I need to do moving forward.
What stands out to me is the reminder that excellence and perfection are not the same thing. We all have only about 30,000 days in a lifetime to learn, grow, and make a positive impact. Greatness comes not from being perfect, but from continuously discovering, improving, and helping others along the way.
Experiencing many fo the thinds stated during the past many years, I'm very happy to see that written down
In addition, having separated the general statement into role-aligned versions with actual behavior guidance is crucial. To know what we at JMP can ask for and what we are asked to behave like allows us to keep up the great culture. Thanks to all involved people!
I’m so happy to see kudos and comments on this article. I really love this statement too. And as a long-time employee, I’ve seen JMPers reach great heights, and, at times, I’ve seen us struggle to maintain our culture of cooperation and kindness. Moving forward, I’m going to keep this description handy and do my best to uphold these values.
I generally don't give much credence to documents like this one, but for [maybe the first time ever] I actually believe what I'm reading. The language shows that real accountability and desire exists to do the right thing. I especially like this one-liner that shows leadership is serious without taking themselves too seriously, "JMP leaders go the extra mile (or kilometer)"
The "Our Employees" section really resonates with me individually. It's so great to have some validation that I actually do fit in here when everywhere else has always felt like I had to wear a mask and count my words.
Thanks for distilling so much meaning into a concise message -- I think I see you now.
