Quick Take #4: How two JMPers built nonlinear careers
In the latest Quick Take, Human Resources Director Paul Mastropolo (@Paul-Mastropolo) tackled a big topic from our 2025 Employee Experience Survey: career development. Since traditional upward moves can look a bit different in a smaller organization, we brought in Senior Campaign and Events Specialist Ashley Tannert (@ashley_tannert) and Senior Software Developer Justin Chilton (@Justin_Chilton) to share how they’ve successfully steered their own career journeys.
Tannert talked about pivoting from events to inside sales and back, proving how raising your hand for cross-functional projects can give you a whole new perspective.
Chilton shared how he leveraged tuition reimbursement for a master's degree and passion-driven side projects to successfully transition from tech support to software development. Both agreed that the secret to success includes supportive managers and a willingness to get a little uncomfortable — whether that means chasing a sales quota or tackling public speaking at a Discovery Summit.
With quarterly development check-ins happening now, it's the perfect time to chat with your manager about your goals.
