Opening Excel files in Excel via JMP Journal on Mac and Win

Question

We're creating journals for textbooks, which will be used on both Macs and PC's.  The journals provide access to data sets and other resources for classroom use.  We'd like to have links in the journals to open Excel files directly in Excel rather than in JMP.  Is there a way to do this that would work on both Mac and PC (I know there is a way to do this on Win)?  The journals and data sets are packaged/distributed as add-ins.

Hi Ryan,

Thanks for this response.  This will open the file in JMP, and works on both Mac and Win.  Some of the files we're dealing with are not suitable for JMP and/or we don't want to pull them into JMP for a particular reason.  So, we need to be able to open the files in Excel instead.  Do you know of a way to do this?

Hi Mia

I just spoke to Stan about this some for a new user learning project I'm working on.  If you script the Journal link using "Open" and the .xls file is local, everything should work fine.

Right click in a new Journal, then select the Add Script Button, add a title and enter the following in the script

Open("Children.xls")

with that xls file in the same directory.

When you make the Add-In choose both platforms and choose JMP 11 for compatibility then test on both OS(s).
