What inspired this Wish List Request?
The current regex formula does not allow the global regex modifier /g in it's regex function in the formula platform. This means that you can not create a formula that finds ALL instances of a certain pattern. It finds only the first. This is something that is important when trying to automate finding specific words or strings of words.
The column utility "New Column by Text Matching" does find all instances of a text string, but applying this utility is not captured in Workflow.
Under the Recode platform, the "Replace With" option does find all instances and is captured - it appears in the log as a regex formula with a GLOBALREPLACE modifier. However, this allows you to replace all instances of the pattern of interest, while keeping the rest of the text string, it does not allow you to just keep the pattern of interest. So there is not a good solution currently. If customers are using WFB, they will not be able to use the column utility and will find that they cannot automate this easily.
Please describe the new or improved feature or solution you would like to see.
- Allow a GLOBAL modifier in regex (or allow /g to work)
AND
- add an option to recode that is the opposite from Replace With and just shows all instances of a desired string, not the rest of the text.
What would the value be to you and/or other users if this new feature is provided?
Time saved for customers who are trying to find multiple instances of a pattern and want to automate that. Output for machines, tests, instrumentation, logs etc. often have automated output and customers need to sift through the text to find specific word or string of words of interest and be able to automate this.
Is this an external customer request?
A customer had this request but was able to work out a solution by capturing the script from the "New Column with text Matching" option under the red triangle to create a custom workflow builder step. It is not easy to find that the script is available under the red triangle for that utility.
Is there a competitive software package that has this feature or solution that we should be aware of?
