Restore data-grid behavior: Pasting onto column names to rename themWhat inspired this wish list request? In pre-JMP 18 versions, selecting one or more column names in the Columns pane and pasting lines from the clipboard would rename the selected columns based on the pasted text — typically separated by tabs or line breaks. In JMP 19, this no longer works. Pasting appears to be ignored, and does not affect the selected columns. Example use case: I have a text file with 10 new variable names and a JMP table with 10 unnamed columns. I used to be able to copy the names from the text file, select the 10 column headers in JMP's Columns pane, and paste — instantly renaming them. This was a powerful and elegant workflow for organizing data.
What is the improvement you would like to see? Please restore the ability to paste names directly onto selected column names to rename them. This used to be a very helpful feature and enabled fast bulk renaming, saving time and avoiding human error when copying names individually.
Why is this idea important? It allows quick, accurate batch renaming of columns without repetitive manual entry, saving time and reducing user error.

@Sarah-Sylvestre could you please check if the absence of the functionality in JMP19 is considered a bug.
if it's no bug: how many kudos do we have to collect to get it implemented again? any chance that it will comeback in JMP19.0.1 ?
all the eastereggs in JMP are great. But if a function is not documented at all, there is a significant risk that it gets deleted accidentally:

Re: Restore data-grid behavior: Pasting onto column names to rename them - Status changed to: Yes, Stay Tuned! We're excited to share that this functionality will be available in JMP 19.1. It will work just like it did in JMP 18, with one small change: when you paste column names, a "Recode - Column Names" pop-up menu will appear. You can choose to interact with it or simply click Recode —either way, the core functionality remains the same.
I will also share some information from one of our developers on how you can currently accomplish this in JMP:
There are several ways to address this after your data is in JMP. However, it should be faster (and with better handling of column data and modeling types) to use import tools:
- Use "Paste With Column Names" under the JMP Data Table "Edit" menu.
- Excel-specific
- Use the JMP Excel Add-in in the Excel ribbon to transfer your selection from Excel to JMP using the "Data Table" button.
- Import your .xls or .xlsx file into JMP rather than using copy/paste.
Re: Restore data-grid behavior: Pasting onto column names to rename them@Sarah-Sylvestre :
Thanks for the update! I'm really glad to hear this functionality is returning — it was one of those small features that made a big difference in everyday workflows. That said, I'll admit there was something incredibly clean and intuitive about the previous behavior. When I select column names in the Columns pane and hit "Paste," I'm not really expecting — or hoping — for a dialog box to appear. It just used to do the right thing quietly and efficiently.
That said, I appreciate that the core functionality will still work, and I can definitely get used to the new flow. Being able to paste directly into the Recode Column Names dialog would also have potential. Looking forward to 19.1!
Last, re. currently functional workarounds, I've used Cols->Column Names->Move down, then paste over the names, and then ...->Move up to restore them as column names. Requires tab- instead of newline-delimited values, but it's better than rebuilding the table.
Re: Restore data-grid behavior: Pasting onto column names to rename themI second the input from @BHarris about clean and intuitive behavior.
Why the change to "Recode - Column Names" pop-up menu?
Re: Restore data-grid behavior: Pasting onto column names to rename themperhaps my fault?
Recode and Recode Column Names: apply for specific rows/columns
or maybe
Recode Column Names- Only selected columns @reese_sj
seems the developers liked this idea
- and found the old way too secret?

Re: Restore data-grid behavior: Pasting onto column names to rename them19.1 doesn't work like 18. It was such a useful feature. I'm very sad...
Re: Restore data-grid behavior: Pasting onto column names to rename themIs 19.1 released? I don't see it as being available.
Re: Restore data-grid behavior: Pasting onto column names to rename themright! 19.0.1 is available. My mistake! I anyway miss that function.
Re: Restore data-grid behavior: Pasting onto column names to rename them
Re: Restore data-grid behavior: Pasting onto column names to rename themIt's back!
Looks like this functionality is now available in 19.1, with the Recode Columns window appearing when column names are pasted. It feels a bit heavier than before since it opens a dialog instead of applying immediately, but it is still a nice improvement overall.
(Just a note for the developer– In testing, I tried a variety of behaviors, such as pasting empty lines (which are ignored) and pasting three lines into five column names (which updates the first three and retains the original names for the remaining two). My only additional comment is that when I press Escape on the recode window, it brings up a secondary modal with “Cancel” and “Discard”, and there does not appear to be a keyboard shortcut for selecting “Discard”, which forces the user back to the mouse.)
