Please help us congratulate Pre-Sales Support Manager Phil Kay (@Phil_Kay) for being honored with the Greenfield Challenge award.
The award was presented as part of the 25th-anniversary celebrations of the European Network for Business and Industrial Statistics (ENBIS), held in Piraeus, Greece, Sept. 14-18. Kay attended the conference with JMP colleagues Principal Systems Engineer Volker Kraft (@volker_kraft) and Advanced Analytics R&D Senior Director Chris Gotwalt (@chris_gotwalt1).
What is the Greenfield Challenge award?
The Greenfield Challenge Award is named in honor of the late Tony Greenfield, a highly respected figure in the field of statistics. Greenfield was a passionate advocate for improving the communication of the value of statistical work. The award recognizes individuals who excel at this very challenge. This year’s award was a special edition, presented to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the ENBIS conference.
Winning the Greenfield Challenge is considered a huge achievement within the statistical community, and for Kay, it's particularly meaningful because it's a special 25th-anniversary version of the award. The award’s prestige comes from its focus on the crucial, often-overlooked skill of communicating complex statistical concepts in a clear and compelling way.
It's a testament to a practitioner's ability to not only understand statistics but also to make them accessible and valuable to others. Kay was nominated by a professional from a competing software company, which highlights the respect he has earned across the industry and reflects the friendly, collaborative spirit of the ENBIS organization.
What this means for Phil and JMP
For Kay, the award is a source of immense pride, validating his personal philosophy. “Finding new, interesting, and sometimes silly ways to talk about statistics is both a rewarding professional practice and a passion,” Kay said.
He sees his work, particularly his #DOEbyPhilKay project on LinkedIn, as a fun way to engage with the subject. Kay presented a lecture at ENBIS about this project, using visual explorations of statistics captured with JMP to demonstrate his approach.
For JMP, this recognition further solidifies our long-standing and positive relationship with ENBIS, a relationship Kay credits largely to the efforts of Volker Kraft. Kay believes the award is, in part, an acknowledgment of the collective work JMP colleagues have done to support the conference over the years. This award celebrates the JMP team's commitment to advancing the field of statistics and communicating its value, reinforcing our position as a key partner in the global statistical community.
Kay will kick off Discovery Summit Online on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 12:30 p.m. EDT, with a keynote JMP’s Superpower is Multidimensional Vision. Be sure to register ahead of time so you don't miss!
