Make Nonlinear Solver routines available through JSL, instead of through Nonlinear platformWhat inspired this Wish List Request? To be honest, this is a personal request that others may find helpful in the future. I'm trying to write a script in JMP for a Discovery Summit paper that requires a nonlinear solution, and I cannot do this from within JSL.
Please describe the new or improved feature or solution you would like to see. The script solves a nonlinear set of equations. I can use Excel Solver to solve this problem, but it is very difficult to set up in a JMP data table (where I could use the Nonlinear platform to solve it.) Instead I would like access to the solver routines from within JSL, where I could write the functions (perhaps in matrix form), and then call Solver. Other tools (Python, Matlab, etc.) have this capability. (In fact, I hope to call the Python solver for the purposes of my paper.)
What would the value be to you and/or other users if this new feature is provided? Customers could solve a wider range of nonlinear problems via JSL.
Is this an external customer request? No, this just comes from me.
Is there a competitive software package that has this feature or solution that we should be aware of? There are a variety of solver packages available in Python, C, Matlab, Excel. I don't know if Minitab, SPSS, etc. have nonlinear solvers, or allow user access.
Will this impact a renewal, expansion, or adoption at a customer, and does this put an account at risk if we do not address this? Not that I know of.
Advanced Statistical ModelingAutomation and ScriptingScriptingRe: Make Nonlinear Solver routines available through JSL, instead of through Nonlinear platform - Status changed to: Not Planned For NowBased on conversations with @JerryFish , the problem could be solved using the Minimize( ) or Maximize( ) JSL functions. Moving this to Not Planned For Now.
Re: Make Nonlinear Solver routines available through JSL, instead of through Nonlinear platform - Status changed to: InvestigatingI shared with @JerryFish that the JSL Minimize() or Maximize() functions should be able to do what he wants to do. @JerryFish let me know how that works out.
Re: Make Nonlinear Solver routines available through JSL, instead of through Nonlinear platformHi @SamGardner . I've been working on this over the Thanksgiving holiday, and I've been able to solve the problem in JMP using the Nonlinear platform. I'll send two files separately to you that show how I did it. (They are pretty rough at this point... more refinement needed... but you'll get the idea.)
A little background: @Jason_Wiggins and I are writing a paper for Discovery Europe 23. It involves assessing the cost of manufacturing line gauges making Type 1 and Type 2 errors.
- It is simple enough to do this if we know the true part distribution being made in manufacturing, along with the gage error characteristics.
- But it gets tricky if you have a measured part distribution, and know the gauge error characteristics, and then want to estimate the true part distribution.
The files show how I solved the problem using Nonlinear, but Nonlinear forces the data to be included in a data table. I think it would be nice if JSL allowed access to Nonlinear by data generated in vectors/matrices internal to JSL, avoiding the data table.
Hopefully that makes sense. Happy to provide more info if needed. Thanks!
Re: Make Nonlinear Solver routines available through JSL, instead of through Nonlinear platform - Status changed to: Needs InfoRe: Make Nonlinear Solver routines available through JSL, instead of through Nonlinear platform - Status changed to: Needs Info@JerryFish interesting idea. I am curious to find out more about the problem you are working on, and what kind of non-linear solver is needed. Is this a model fitting problem (fitting a nonlinear model to data), or solving a system of nonlinear equations?
Re: Make Nonlinear Solver routines available through JSL, instead of through Nonlinear platform - Status changed to: AcknowledgedHi @JerryFish, thank you for your suggestion! We have captured your request and will take it under consideration.
Re: Make Nonlinear Solver routines available through JSL, instead of through Nonlinear platform@JerryFish I would like to see the problem you are working on so I can understand the issue better.
