Feedback needed on JMP Pro Starter Prototype -- By 8/21/2015Hi folks --
We need your help.
Joshua Day (Nicole Jones' development summer student) has been working on a Windows Only JSL prototype of an updated JMP Starter, which would also highlight features unique to JMP Pro and should help with conversation re: the differences between the products in sales situations. This is something many of you have asked for in the past.
Joshua is looking for feedback in the next week as he will be presenting this prototype to John and if there are any suggestions or defects, he'd like to get them addressed in the short term. So If you have any bandwidth to look at this in the next few days it would be much appreciated.
Below is the note from Joshua. Please leave a comment on this thread and I'll make sure he gets the feedback.
A couple of notes:
I’d like to take you up on your offer to share the JMP starter prototype on the SE file exchange you mentioned a while back. I’m showing this to John soon, so I’d appreciate feedback within the next week by (8/21/2015).
By default, this script produces the JMP Pro starter. You can change the second line of the script to “ispro = 0” to see what JMP Standard user would see.
Known issues (limitations of using JSL instead of C++):
- “Open” buttons don’t use correct file extensions
- “Open Help” just opens the main help page. I intend for it to open the help section associated with the selected category
- “OC Curves” button does not work
Thanks,
-Josh
Re: Feedback needed on JMP Pro Starter Prototype -- By 8/21/2015Cool...I know some customers really rely on the legacy JMP Starter menu to kind of give them some ideas of which set of platforms should be used in which situations. Kind of like a security blanket for "Am I using the right general analysis methods?". JMP Pro users are really no different...just at a different point in the statistical methods expertise/maturity curve.
Re: Feedback needed on JMP Pro Starter Prototype -- By 8/21/2015Thanks for the quick feedback, everyone! I'll be incorporating these comments into the next version. If you think of any more comments/requests, please let me know.
Re: Feedback needed on JMP Pro Starter Prototype -- By 8/21/2015Thanks for the comments. For the JMP Pro category, I mostly just reused the text from the "Do You Need JMP Pro?" factsheet. I'll take a look through the docs and add some "Why?" bullet points.
Re: Feedback needed on JMP Pro Starter Prototype -- By 8/21/2015Thanks for catching that!
Re: Feedback needed on JMP Pro Starter Prototype -- By 8/21/2015Nicely done. Well thought out. It will be very helpful for the older guys like me with short term long term memory.
Re: Feedback needed on JMP Pro Starter Prototype -- By 8/21/2015One little tweak I'd like to see is to have the window resize with the content... there's a lot of dead space when you move from something like the "Quick Analysis" section to the "Multivariate" section. Otherwise, I'm a big fan - I love the way things are broken up in each section. It makes it easier to read.
An interesting thought... would it be possible to set this up as an optional preference to integrate this directly into the home menu (a la the clinical interface)? I'm thinking replace two of the panes in the Windows version and maybe be at the bottom of the interface in the OS X.
Re: Feedback needed on JMP Pro Starter Prototype -- By 8/21/2015Looks great. I agree with Jordan and Peter's comments. Other than that glad to see Naïve Bayes and Text Explorer are both coming in JMP 13 Pro.
Re: Feedback needed on JMP Pro Starter Prototype -- By 8/21/2015Thnx Dan, Got it working. Josh, this is a really fun and quick tool to explore JMP features. Great job. I'm using JMP 12.0 Mac
- Visually I'd like to see the left top nav list increase in pt size.
- Visually I'd like to see the titles all increase in pt size providing contrast between categories and options.
- Under Quick Analysis - Change the Graph Builder Title to Graphing or Graphs then have Graph Builder as an option
- Could we have this tool automatically open Big Class or another Universal data table? So we don't have to open a new Data Table or get "Not Data Table" or a Pop Up window that directs us "You must first one a data table for this platform to launch"
- Got a few errors under Quick Analysis Clean up and Open Data Table: "Fatal error in access or evaluation of 'Main Menu' , Main Menu/*###*/("Recode")"
Again, nice work and fun to use.
Re: Feedback needed on JMP Pro Starter Prototype -- By 8/21/2015I like the look and feel. I agree with Jordan that this can help me articulate in greater detail capability and use case differentiation between JMP and JMP Pro.
A couple suggestions:
1. In the Model Comparison box the first bullet sort of implies that ONLY models fit in JMP Pro can be compared. I see the distinction in that a user has to have Pro to have the Comparison functionality...but maybe a simpler way to say what's in this text block is: "Automatic comparison of models." I guess what I'm trying to say is theoretically a person could only use fit personalities in JMP, and the Model Comparison platform will still work as long as they have Pro.

2. Also, I think it's subtle, but for all the entries in the JMP section, each descriptor talks not so much about the "How" of that platform, but the "Why?" of that platform. In the JMP Pro section each text box tends to lean on the "How" not the "Why?". Maybe a bullet or two on the "Why?" for each would add value? I think the core text is already written in each platforms' introductory narrative in the JMP documentation...just distill that into a bullet or two? For example:
JMP Documentation:
Potential text for Starter: Uses shrinkage techniques that specifically address modeling correlated and/or high dimensional data. Emphasis can be exploratory data analysis or predictive modeling.
Re: Feedback needed on JMP Pro Starter Prototype -- By 8/21/2015Found the Mac version posted by Josh above , checking it out now.
Re: Feedback needed on JMP Pro Starter Prototype -- By 8/21/2015Hi Ryan -- It's Windows Only right now b/c that path doesn't exist on the Mac. You can comment it out with "//" before the path (the line of text should turn green). Then run this script and you should be in good shape.
Re: Feedback needed on JMP Pro Starter Prototype -- By 8/21/2015Can't wait to see this, however, when I run this script I get this. (Mac J12)
Error with file: Path is invalid: /C:/JMPdev/main/source/WinOS/src/JMPCSharp/Images/Large/splash_header.png.
Re: Feedback needed on JMP Pro Starter Prototype -- By 8/21/2015Josh,
First impression is that this looks great!
it feels streamlined and less cluttered, shorter descriptions are nice too.

Re: Feedback needed on JMP Pro Starter Prototype -- By 8/21/2015I like it a lot. Especially the "JMP Pro" section -- it's great to see all the Pro features collected together in a single location. I think it would make standard JMP users envious!
Small bug -- the descriptive text doesn't seem to be updating for the "Pro" features.

Re: Feedback needed on JMP Pro Starter Prototype -- By 8/21/2015Here is a version that should work on both Mac and Windows. One more JSL restriction is that the "Platform" button doesn't launch with the specified method.
