It's Earth Day, so let's celebrate the impactful ways JMP employees are cultivating a more sustainable future, both within our communities and beyond. From hands-in-the-dirt volunteering at Burkett Farm to fostering a deeper understanding of our interconnectedness with nature through beekeeping and even heartwarming tales of animal rescue in our Shanghai office, the spirit of environmental stewardship is thriving within JMP.
Every day presents an opportunity to cultivate a more sustainable community. What actions, big or small, are you taking to nurture a greener, healthier future right where you live? Share your impactful stories and inspiration with other JMPers in the comments below!
Cultivating climate-smart food systems to grow community resilience
Burkett Farm is a four-acre, community-based farm focused on sustainable agriculture and climate-smart design. It cultivates produce, flowers, and herbs using sustainable and organic methods, and distributes them to the community through partnerships with local food pantries and nonprofits. It relies on volunteers to help with farm tasks such as planting, weeding, harvesting, mulching, and packing produce.
Earlier in April, JMP staff volunteered at Burkett Farms to help plant and cultivate vegetables, flowers, and herbs. If you are interested in volunteering at Burkett Farms with a JMP group in the future, contact Senior Human Resources Coordinator Beth Evans (@BethEvans).

Anything is “paws-ible”
This Earth Day, the JMP Shanghai office hopes to raise awareness about the importance of animal protection and express gratitude for the endless opportunities our planet provides for connection and mutual support between humans and nature.
This is the story of Lulu, formerly known as Little Orange. He used to roam around the JMP Shanghai office building, bringing smiles to people who’d stop to play with him during breaks from busy work.
But life wasn’t easy for Little Orange. He disappeared for some days, and when he showed up again, his neck was badly injured.
Thanks to the care and patience from everyone who loves him, especially our friends at the JMP Shanghai office, Little Orange was taken to the vet in time. After a tough surgery, his signature white “scarf” started to grow back. He is now adopted by Associate Systems Engineer Bingli Li @Binglil1 and has a new name, Lulu. He lives a happy life with his new friend, a three-legged tabby named TreeTree.

JMP resources to share on Earth Day
This month’s The Analytic Advantage newsletter shares excellent resources promoting more sustainable practices that help minimize our impact on the environment.
- At his JMP Discovery Summit Europe 2025 plenary talk, environmentalist Alexander Verbeek, Policy Director at the Environment & Development Resource Centre in Brussels and a World Fellow at Yale University, shared how advanced analytical software is being used to promote sustainable practices, minimize environmental impacts, and offer hope for a brighter future. You can learn more and listen to his talk here.
- We’re all trying to do our part to diminish harmful impacts on the environment. Green chemistry, and those who practice it, are committed to designing chemical products and processes that eliminate, or at least reduce, the generation of hazardous substances. In this on-demand Statistically Speaking webinar, learn more about green chemistry, the impact it can have on the environment, and ways to practice green chemistry for yourself.
- Climate change is a reality largely driven by human activity. Though we’ve missed goals to slow climate change and global warming, there are actions we can take to limit the consequences. How many flights have you taken in the last year? How many times a month do you eat meat? Do you drive to work? All of the answers to these questions matter, but how much? This Discovery Summit Europe 2023 presentation looks for a data-based answer to this question by using JMP and then examines actions that can be taken now to prevent a climate catastrophe later.
If you want more like this each month, you can subscribe to The Analytics Advantage.
I love so much about this story! Katie-Beth's video is so fun!
And here's a fun fact: Free-ranging cats kill as many as 5 million birds a year in China. I bet Lulu (formerly Little Orange) did his share of damage to area wildlife before he got his forever home with Bingli Li and TreeTree.
