As part of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's (MEXT) initiative, a nationwide academic achievement and learning status survey is conducted every April for sixth graders in elementary school and third graders in junior high school. The purpose of the survey is to ensure equal opportunities for compulsory education and to maintain and improve the standard of compulsory education. However, there are few reports examining effective education based on the survey, or cross-sectional analysis of data obtained from other surveys. In this study, the impact of various factors on academic achievement was analyzed using multiple regression analysis on the correct answer rates for four subjects for third graders in junior high school by prefecture obtained in 2017. As a result, the following positive factors were extracted: junior high school homework completion rate, junior high school self-affirmation rate, junior high school cultural club participation rate, junior high school home conversation rate, elementary school cram school attendance rate, early rising score (minutes), and smartphone/PC liking score (%). The negative factors were extracted: elementary school breakfast intake rate and divorce rate per 1,000 population.
