On the job...
Sheila plays a vital role in navigating the complex legal landscape for JMP. "My role primarily involves overseeing and advising on legal matters related to privacy, security, AI, marketing, procurement, and corporate transactions such as drafting and negotiating our customer agreements," she explained. "A typical day includes reviewing questions concerning our customer contracts, providing legal advice via phone or email to different departments like Sales or Information Security, joining standing project meetings with Digital Operations and Business Operations, and drafting AI and privacy guidance for various business stakeholders to ensure that

Her journey into legal counsel is rooted in a strong educational foundation. "I received my Bachelor of Arts in English from UNC Chapel Hill (Go Tarheels!) and Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from North Carolina Central University School of Law," Sheila shared. "I started my career as an in-house healthcare compliance attorney. After a few years, I transitioned into more tech-savvy industries. I joined JMP because I’m passionate about working in an environment where I can use my legal expertise to directly shape the company’s success."
Among her favorite projects at JMP, Sheila highlights her work on cookie consent banners and customer contract negotiations. "I love contract negotiations because it's a dynamic process where I can leverage my analytical skills to find mutually beneficial solutions for both JMP and our customers. To further empower our sales team, I developed a comprehensive Sales Empowerment Playbook."
What Sheila values most about working at JMP is the collaborative culture. "We have a great team, and I get to work closely with cross-functional teams across the business. There’s a lot of respect for diverse perspectives, which keeps things fresh and innovative."
For those starting in her field, Sheila offers insightful advice: "I’d advise staying curious and proactive. The legal field can be very nuanced, so being a lifelong learner is key. Also, develop strong communication skills. Being able to translate complex legal issues into easily understandable language for non-legal colleagues is essential. Lastly, build a network of mentors who can guide you through the challenges you’ll face early on."
When it comes to the JMP Brand Pillars, Sheila resonates with the "Innovative" pillar. "I ensure that everything I do aligns with our company’s values and mission. I represent our brand through my work ethic, attention to detail, and commitment to integrity," she said. "I love working at a company that values creativity, especially when it comes to developing solutions for complex legal challenges."

Outside of work, Sheila is passionate about volunteer work. "I currently volunteer with the North Carolina Bar Association, where I serve as Chair-Elect of the Young Lawyers Division. I also give back to my community by volunteering at events hosted by my local chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc."
A fun fact that might surprise many is her adventurous spirit. "Last year, I did a three-day hike across the Inca Trail to get to Machu Picchu, one of the Seven Wonders of the World," Sheila revealed. "I hiked for up to 10 hours a day and had to cross through the Dead Woman's Pass standing at 13,828 ft."
After a long day, Sheila enjoys trying new hobbies and relaxing with entertainment. "I enjoy playing pickleball or staying in to watch true crime documentaries on Netflix," she said.
Sheila's dedication to legal excellence and her passion for innovation make her an asset to the JMP team. We're grateful to have her!
