Keynote Speech: Meeting the Challenges Brought by the Development of Industry 4.0_Roger HoerlSpeaker: Roger Hoerl,Brate-Peschel Associate Professor of Statistics at Union College and former Director of the Applied Statistics Laboratory at GE Global Research Center
Speech topic: Coping with the challenges brought by the development of Industry 4.0
summary:
Many commentators have recognized that the world is currently experiencing the fourth industrial revolution, or Industry 4.0. The first industrial revolution was brought about by water and steam power, the second by production lines and electricity, and the third by computers and automation. The fourth industrial revolution is an information revolution brought about by big data, the Internet of Things (IoT), and cyber-physical systems. In other words, Industry 4.0 connects the physical world with the information/big data world. This convergence presents a serious challenge for future development. The physical world has a long history of evolution in system improvement, including Frederick Taylor's "scientific management", total quality management, ISO-9000, and Lean Six Sigma. The cyber world leverages these methods while focusing more on big data analysis, also known as data science. Given this, how should companies in the era of Industry 4.0 think about and implement improvements? Are the methods applied in the physical world still valuable? If so, how should data science be integrated with these methods? In the speech, I will explain why answering these questions is crucial to the success of Industry 4.0. At the same time, I will point out a development path called comprehensive improvement and explain why this path born for Industry 4.0 is an inevitable stage on the road to improvement.
