I want to follow up on two recent communications about goal-setting: the email sent by SAS HR last week (see the attachment in this article) and the article posted this week on Inside JMP, which outlines our overall JMP and departmental goals for 2025.
The importance of goal setting
Setting goals, both for the business and for individual development, is essential for personal and collective growth. By aligning our individual goals with both JMP and SAS-wide priorities, we all contribute to the broader mission and vision of our organization. Whether focusing on business outcomes or personal development, clear and actionable goals help us stay focused, motivated, and accountable.
Business goals
As part of our continued efforts to align individual performance with departmental and JMP objectives, we will continue to use Workday to capture business goals for all employees. If you have not yet done so, please make sure to add your 2025 business goals, discussed with your manager, to Workday by March 31. Your business goals should be aligned to a JMP departmental goal, which has been mapped to a SAS Strategic goal. The Inside JMP article will help you map business goals to an appropriate SAS Strategic goal in Workday. Please note that completed 2024 goals will be archived in Q2.

Development goals
In addition to business goals, it's equally important to focus on your own development goals. While Q1 is primarily focused on establishing individual business goals, you may also wish to modify, close, or create new development goals to foster your personal growth.
Starting in 2025, all development goal activities will transition from Workday to PLATO, SAS’ development planning tool. This means that any development goals in Workday will not automatically transfer to PLATO, and employees will need to add both existing and new development goals manually. More detailed information on this shift will be provided in the coming weeks, along with updates on PLATO’s benefits and how to use it effectively.
One of the key advantages of PLATO is that it allows employees to create personalized action plans tied to their development goals and gives them access to a wide range of curated training resources to support their growth. For additional resources, please visit the PLATO SharePoint site.
Business vs. development goals
The distinction between business and development goals is that business goals are centered around the organization’s growth, profitability, and sustainability, as well as alignment with JMP’s strategic vision, while development goals are more personal as they are focused on enhancing one’s skills and fulfillment. Ideally, one’s development goal(s) should enhance your skills and abilities so that you can best meet the business goals.
For example, one of an Account Executive’s (AE) business goals may be to meet their team’s NSR target goal. An AE’s development goal may be to improve their presentation skills (with all the SMART goal components). Improving the AE’s presentation skills is a development goal that furthers the AE’s ability to meet the business goal.
See the attached PDF for more details on SMART goals.
Moving forward
Goal setting is an integral part of our collective success. Whether you are setting business goals to drive JMP performance or development goals to enhance your skills, both play a critical role in our shared achievement. If you have any questions or need assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out to a member of the JMP HR team.
Thank you for your continued commitment to achieving excellence, both as individuals and as part of the wider JMP team.
