Depending on how well roasting/from the community does, I have one more idea for repeating topic: Puzzles and Challenges. These would be challenges we share to the community and then release our answers later. We could also go through some community member solutions (or even try with AI to create "summary" if we are lazy...).
I have quite a few of these already as I created them for JSL training course I held at Murata Finland, below are few examples
/*""" Padding numbers exercise
Author: jthi
Creation Date: 2023-12-11
Creation JMP Version: JMP Pro 17.2
Description: Figure out how to add padding to numbers using character presentation
in such a way that the numbers are always three characters long. Test with values between
0-999.
Note: Purpose is not to create a function to perform this task. You of course can create
a function or use expressions but we haven't yet covered them in this course.
Examples:
Input Output
1 "001"
10 "010"
100 "100"
Bonus 1:
If the value is less than 0 or over 999 set the value as empty string
Bonus 2:
Figure at least one additional method to perform this same task
Extra:
Perform similar calculation on a data table and create new column
"""*/
Names Default To Here(1);
input_list = {1, 10, 100}; // you can create your own examples
/*
// Extra, create a formula to perform similar action
dt_input = New Table("Untitled 44",
Add Rows(1000),
Compress File When Saved(1),
New Column("Input", Numeric, "Continuous", Set Values(0::999))
);
// dt_input << New Column/("Output", )
*/
/*""" Extract first occurrence from a string
Author: jthi
Creation Date: 2023-12-11
Creation JMP Version: JMP Pro 17.2
Description: You have a string which might contain multiple sub-strings starting with specific symbol. If such symbol
is found, extract the first occurrence. You can either include the symbol or exclude it
Example (symbol is #):
Input Output
"#pnc1 #pnc2 #other" "pnc1" or "#pnc1"
"mystring nothing #finally" "finally"
"my might string" ""
"mytest #test \!"a\!"" "test"
Bonus: Instead of a symbol you have a combination of symbols. You can leave the combination of symbols in place
Example (combination of symbols is ^#$):
Input: Output:
"^#$found but #not $found" "found" or "^#$found"
"^first #second ^#$match $no" "match"
"#could #^$we ^#have a match" ""
"something ^#$^#$weird has happened" "^#$weird" or "^#$^#$weird"
"feels ^#$like^#$ some ^#$typo" "like^#$"
"copy paste error ^#$like^#$" "like^#$"
Extra: Figure out multiple ways to extract these values
"""*/
Names Default To Here(1);
// Exercise
input_list = {"#pnc1 #pnc2 #other", "mystring nothing #finally", "my might string", "mytest #test \!"a\!""};
// Bonus
input_list2 = {"^#$found but #not $found", "^first #second ^#$match $no", "#could #^$we ^#have a match",
"something ^#$^#$weird has happened", "feels ^#$like^#$ some ^#$typo", "copy paste error ^#$like^#$"};
I like this (and puzzles in general), the question is if the audience wants to consume something during that hour of ScriptersClub and use later, or if the as well want to prepare in advance and work later on. I do not know. Perhaps JMP could compose a small survey with a few questions: what topics, what way to work, etc., that we poll during next session?
I don't personally think these are good for "during". They should be done and discussed (by community) outside of the sessions and we can then make summary / review some of the answers / post our solution and reasoning behind them. This could potentially work instead of the "from the community" as my original idea for "from the community" was to review some of the problems which have been posted to community. Most of the exercises/challenges I have written are modified versions of questions I have either solved in community or work.
