Question: Does "shash" in "SHASH distributon" have some general meaning? or Are they just inital letters without any Enlglish meaning? This is a very naive and unimportant question.
The Sinh-Arcsinh distribution is also called "SHASH distribution".
Does this "shash" have a popular general meaning (like "lasso" in LASSO regression) in English? Or, are these alphabets just initial letters in "SinH-ArcSinH" (like "ANOVA" or "AOV" for analysis of variance)?
It seems that the brand name for wooden brushes made by a German company is called "SHASH".
https://www.amazon.com/s?k=shash
But I don't have no idea for the connection between SHASH distributions and wooden brushes.
In an Internet dictionary, "shash" is explained as "(obsolete) The scarf of a turban." and "(obsolete) A sash." But again, I cannot imagine the connection between SHASH distributions and these meanings...
(On Oct-15, I will have a seminar to beginners, and explain about SHASH distributions on the Distribution platform.)
Basic Data Analysis and ModelingRe: Question: Does "shash" in "SHASH distributon" have some general meaning? or Are they just inital letters without any Enlglish meaning?Hi @yusuke_ono,
You can find the answer in the JMP Help section related to Fit Distributions :
"Fit SHASH
Fits a sinh-arcsinh (SHASH) distribution to the data. The SHASH distribution is similar to Johnson distributions in that it is a transformation to normality, but the SHASH distribution includes the normal distribution as a special case. This distribution can be symmetric or asymmetric."
SHASH = SinH-ArcSinH
Hope this can help you,
Re: Question: Does "shash" in "SHASH distributon" have some general meaning? or Are they just inital letters without any Enlglish meaning?Thank you for reply.
My question is whether "shash" is also a daily-life Engnlish word or not.
(I can only speak Japanese, and my English skill is very limited.)
For example, "LASSO" stands for "Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator". But "LASSO" is also "lasso", which cowboys use for catching animals.
Re: Question: Does "shash" in "SHASH distributon" have some general meaning? or Are they just inital letters without any Enlglish meaning?as @Victor_G --The term "SHASH" in "SHASH distribution" is an abbreviation derived directly from "Sinh-Arcsinh," referring to the hyperbolic sine and inverse hyperbolic sine functions used in defining the distribution. In this context, "SHASH" does not have a popular or general meaning in English beyond representing these mathematical functions.
When explaining the SHASH distribution to beginners, it would be helpful to clarify that "SHASH" stands for "Sinh-Arcsinh." This highlights the mathematical foundations of the distribution and avoids any confusion with unrelated meanings of the word "shash."
Re: Question: Does "shash" in "SHASH distributon" have some general meaning? or Are they just inital letters without any Enlglish meaning?Hi @yusuke_ono Is "shash" is also a daily-life English word? No, not that I'm aware of (on either side of the Atlantic).
