As the title suggests, this book is different from traditional books on experimental design, and is based on the assumption that software (JMP) will be used. The authors, B. Jones, are 'Doctor DOE' at SAS, and DC Montgomery is a professor at Arizona State University. In traditional experimental design books, the analysis results are mainly in the form of analysis of variance tables, but in this book, in addition, JMP analysis results such as profiles, plots of predicted values and actual values, effect summaries, and residual plots are shown, so readers can understand intuitively and from multiple perspectives. The contents of the book cover a wide range of general topics, but the highlight is the screening design (Chapter 8). It is useful to see the in-depth suggestions on which experimental design practitioners should use. The difficult concept of resolution is also helped to understand by JMP's correlation color map, confounding matrix, and design generation rules. It is clear that DSD is a reasonable experimental design for experiments mainly involving continuous quantities.
The book is packed with useful information, including differences in analysis results due to randomization, repetition, and block handling, methods for dealing with the often troublesome problem of missing data handling, the trade-off between orthogonality of main effects and optimal confounding, and the historical background. Split-plot design (SPD) is also explained in an easy-to-understand manner.
He established Torin Consulting after serving as General Manager of FA Development, Director of Research and Development, Director of Quality Assurance Promotion, and Advisor to Azbil Kimmon at Yamatake Honeywell (now Azbil). His areas of expertise include improving yield and quality through production data analysis, general statistical problem solving such as market defect prediction, robust design, optimization design, and experimental planning, on-site guidance such as design review, root cause analysis (RCA), human error prevention, and process improvement. His publications include "The Essence of Internet Business" (JUSE Press, 2001, co-authored) [Winner of the Telecom Social Science Award], "Practical Success Strategies for Startup Companies" (Chuo Keizai Press, 2011, co-authored), and "Easy-to-understand Book of Problem Solving" (Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun, 2014, sole author). His main thesis is "Proposal for a Workshop to Promote the Transmission and Reception of Awareness of Near Misses and Anomalies on the Production Line" (Society for Quality Control, 2016, Winner of the 2016 Quality Technology Award). Main lecture: "Proposal of a mechanism to visualize organizational factors that induce work errors and promote improvements" (Discovery-Japan 2018)
