Level: Advanced
Hyper Design is a general-purpose and comprehensive design method, allowing for a wide range of practical applications. In particular, with regard to robust design, it enables flexible design that goes far beyond the boundaries of conventional robust design. Until now, most robust designs have treated disturbance factors as qualitative factors. However, in many cases, the disturbance factors are essentially quantitative factors, and are treated as qualitative factors due to the convenience of design theory and limitations of measurement methods (often due to a lack of ingenuity). Hyper Design can treat quantitative disturbance factors as quantitative variables, making it a design method that has significantly evolved from conventional tactical robust design to strategic and tactical robust design.
The key to robust design of quantitative disturbance factors is the advanced use of composite functions (functions of functions). Systematic use of multiple (multi-level) composite functions enables groundbreaking optimization design. Advanced software is essential to handle complex nested composite functions, but JMP makes this easy. Hyper Design provides a new paradigm that enables design (strategic and strategic design) that goes beyond the boundaries of conventional thinking (tactical thinking).
In this presentation, we will specifically discuss the theory of robust design of quantitative disturbance factors and its applications using data from actual cases covered in papers and books.
The author has been researching and practicing QM (Quality Management), SQM (Statistical Quality Management) and design theory for half a century (joint research with numerous companies, management guidance, etc.). Since the 1990s, he has proposed a new design paradigm called Hyper Design, and has researched its mathematical basis, HOPE theory (Hyper Optimization for Prospective Engineering), and has jointly developed its support software, HOPE-Add-in for JMP, with SAS. As a result, he has realized a new design methodology through the trinity of Hyper Design, the statistical mathematics of HOPE theory, and the support tool HOPE-Add-in for JMP.
Because design is difficult to access, it is often mistakenly thought of as a special activity for special people. To overcome this misconception and enable more people to master design, the author has developed a new educational method in addition to theoretical research. This is an experiential education method that uses real teaching materials (paper helicopters, paper gliders, coin shooting, etc.) and virtual teaching materials (ball flying simulator, etc.). This educational program (ranging from the basics of statistics to hyper-design) is designed to be easy to understand and interesting, as it uses JMP to visualize analysis and design in many situations. This education has been implemented for over 30 years at universities both in Japan and abroad (Keio University, Yale University, Tokyo University of Science, University of Tsukuba, etc.) and at numerous companies, and its effectiveness has been confirmed.
