Level: Beginner
Shiga University established Japan's first Data Science (DS) Faculty and Graduate School, creating a system that can train people capable of creating value from data, from literacy to expert level. Graduates have been highly praised by companies facing challenges in utilizing DS and AI. Since 2016, as part of the Mathematics and DS Education Strengthening Consortium, the university has been promoting various collaborative projects with its base schools, including skill set development, teaching materials provision, and faculty development training.
At the DS Department, students' first opportunity to practice statistical methods using specialized software and data is in a seminar-style class held in the first semester of their second year. Students put into practice the methods they learned in classrooms during their first year, setting their own themes and making presentations. One of the pieces of software they learn is JMP, which can be installed on students' personal computers and used at home, making it suitable for a combined online and in-person class format.
This presentation will introduce 1. the Shiga University DS undergraduate and graduate school curriculum, 2. the positioning of classes using JMP in the DS undergraduate curriculum, 3. the content of the exercises, and 4. the relationship with the Mathematics and DS Education Enhancement Center Consortium.
