I think I worked on a similar challenge with user hogi at Discovery Manchester. Being an advanced user, he didn't need a simple approach, so this might not qualify for your user, but here's a quick mock-up of the idea. It uses stacked bars of durations. The keys are:
Another approach is to use a scatterplot with a tall rectangle marker and including enough repeated data values to fill the view. Here's one I did 10 years ago where there is one marker per day.
