Interactive DOE workshopOne of my accounts (Clorox) is interested in doing an interactive DOE workshop where an experiment is designed, experiments run, and data collected/analyzed in the same workshop. Curious if any SE's have done something like this and if so, what type of experiments can be done in a office conference room setting without requiring any specialized lab equipment within a span of 2-3 hours?
Re: Interactive DOE workshopPaper helicopters. Ideally you want somewhere indoors with a good drop height. But dropping from 2 metres works okay as well. We've done this with customers and with JMP Academy classes. There is even a JMP-branded template you can use. @Byron_JMP has a lot of experience with this exercise.
The downside is that it is a bit difficult of a mental leap to understand how it relates to the more typical process or formulation development use cases.
There are some other options that I have heard about, including optimising beer head height with factors like glass angle (probably best to use alcohol free).
Or you could use an in-silico simulator. But that takes a lot of the fun, energy and engagement out of it IMO.
Re: Interactive DOE workshopPaper helicopters sounds like exactly what they are looking for, thanks Phil! I'll download the template and try it out at home to see if it'll work well. Much appreciated!
Re: Interactive DOE workshopthe paper helicopter lab is always a big hit. lots of flexibility in how you can set it up and run it. The Statistics for Experimenters (Box Hunter and Hunter) has a nice description and I recently came across this page too https://www.paperhelicopterexperiment.com/design.php
If you let them design the experiment and cut out the helicopters, plan for 2 hrs, at least. It can fit into 1 hr, but then its more of a casual team building experience around a small number of pre determined helicopters, which can still be a lot of fun, but not as much time for the analysis and observations about the experimentation process.
Re: Interactive DOE workshopThanks for sharing your experience @Byron_JMP ! It looks like it would hands on fun and I'm sure the folks at Clorox will enjoy it. It looks like I need to show up with scissors, ruler, scotch tape, and different thickness paper. Any other items I'm missing?
Re: Interactive DOE workshopHey Mark,
When Olivia did it at academy with, she made it even simpler just using that template that Phil shared with only a single thickness of paper. Just different wing lengths and widths and then with or without a paper clip she used Easy DOE with three factors if you precut the paper, it can be done in about an hour. @Ben_Ingham94 has been working on a 3D printed marble run which will be really cool when it is finished.
Re: Interactive DOE workshopYou will need a stopwatch to measure helicopter hover time. they can use their cell phone which has the function of it. (There should be some measurement error!^^)
In my experience, many cases were turned out that no factors are significant or only one main factor is significant. So, many participants were somewhat confusing with the results though most people were having fun in doing experiments. Of course, it is mainly depend on the design of the helicopter.
And, the force of wind by airconditioner was a big noise factor for many cases.
