Welcome to the JMP Development Update for July 12, 2024!
JMP and JMP Pro 19 EA1 installers are now available for authorized users in My JMP. Thanks to everyone for getting this first iteration out there for testing by our beta customers! We are already getting beta tracks and crash reports. We’ll be freezing JMP 19 EA2 on 7/26 so please don’t forget to add feature pages (see How to here) for major new items you’d like to showcase in EA2 and upcoming EAs.
JMP 18.1 source code freeze was on 6/28/24 and security freeze for 18.1 is a little less than a month away (8/9/24). Any showstopper source code fixes requested post-freeze will need to go through the approval process per usual. A critical numeric bug was fixed early in the week and a few final JMP Clinical source changes were approved today.
The JMP 18.2 branch is now open for maintenance bug fix integrations. We will also have an 18.1.1 branch open in the near future reserved for third party security updates and critical showstoppers that cannot wait for 18.2. It remains to be seen if we will encounter showstopper or library fixes that impact JMP source code, but JMP Live is sure to have changes to make there due to its extensive set of third party libraries.
Thanks very much to intern Parker Dingman for offering to demo improvements he’s made to JMP 19 map functionality at the dev meeting this week! If you missed the meeting, you can find the recording here. We’ll have a series of intern-focused JMP Dev meetings over the next few weeks as our students present their summer work.
Thanks to Shannon Leslie for sharing the details on recent Atlassian updates! Please check out the links below to learn about some new items that you may want to take advantage of when working with our Atlassian cloud products.
Thanks very much to Tonya Mauldin for providing details about this week’s JMP 19 beta cases with crashes selected. As always, I’m very grateful to Tonya and Nicole Jones for triaging so many beta cases and working with testers to investigate and report on EA issues. Thanks also to JMP technical support for helping customers with authorization questions as they adopt 18 and 19!

JMP Development Updates
Interactive HTML
- Paul Spychala: Firefox 128 updated their rendering engine, so we needed to rebase all of our test reference images. Pushed in large changes in Javascript to implement laying out Graph Builder reports natively in Javascript instead of relying on JMP JMPHTML-13843, JMPHTML-13844, JMPHTML-13845, JMPHTML-13883. This is needed to implement responsive reports that respond to browser screen size. Added support for Model Screening Profilers in HTML (as long as all methods support HTML profilers) JMPHTML-13918.
- Mike Stickles: Completed temporary enabling of one-way selections – word cloud selections being reflected in the term table - in word clouds (JMPHTML-13665), continuing to work on enabling two-way selections (term table selections also getting reflected in the word cloud), which is requiring fixing the existing table export to work with HTML tables properly. I will be on vacation next week and will pick up this work again on the 22nd.

- Worked with John Sall and Praveena on a web-based Process Screening Browser prototype (JMP-22074). Working on an issue where points with warnings in control charts produced by the Process Screening platform don’t display the row number(JMPHTML-13927).

System/Host Testing-Cary
- Adnane El Hachami: Worked on verifications and my intern expo poster. Learning React, and I have fixed several bugs in the Testing Dashboard.
- Mandy: Keeping up with my JIRA’s and trying to add tests where needed. Worked on about 4 EA1 TS tracks from customer Holgar Specht who been very direct and helpful. Currently investigating a 19-only Tables > Join crash he reported today. Worked on another crash with Column Tags that I found last week. Got 2 different calls from SE’s working on Workflows with Multiple File Import – it sort of works, but required a bit of JSL to get it to let you pick files so I opened a JIRA which may be a New Feature if it gets done in 19. Spent some time testing the New Data Grid for David White on Windows by turning on the proper Preference and running the JSL test suite and filed a few JIRA issues. Need to work hard on this feature if it will be showcased for EA2.
- Nick H: worked on some 19 EA tracks, filing a Jira for a customer suggestion for the new Forced Values column property and reached out to Morgan about a few Notebooks suggestions. Found a crash when clicking on ‘Forced Values’ in the column property window. Noticed that we are no longer able to import JSON files on Mac in JMP19 – the file type is grayed out. And lastly found a bug with Find and Replace on Mac. Continually working on JMP 19 bug verifications and the data project I will be presenting for virtual Discovery.
- Hunter: Checked messages returned at startup with JMP 18.1 and 19.0 on Mac and Windows as my valid license transitioned to expired and later terminated during the week. JIRA verifications and updates on open items, installed Mac Sequoia Dev. Beta 3 on macbeta1x86 in the lab and ran tests, and completed the two security training courses.
- Audrey: Learning about new changes supporting triaging of Control Chart warnings in JMP Live. Updating Jenkins projects now that we’ve switched our maintenance branch to 18.2. Jira & Confluence admin work and consulting with teams. Thank you to James Koepfler, Christine Bevan, Diana Levey for hosting an R&D Leadership Chat and a Resume Workshop for our interns this week!
- Lisa: Looked at an EA track from Holger, tweaked some of the visualizations from the Jira Issues Dashboard and added an activity report for 19.0, and cut out crashes older than 15.2 from the crash scores table.
Web Testing – Cary
- Natalie Horton: Catching up from a long vacation, Large UI changes within the HTML5 reports has impacted our automated tests, specifically the new centered report. The altered location caused all tests to fail. Lots of meetings with Steve and Josh this week to devise a new coordinate strategy. The framework is in place but the testcases must be updated individually. This is underway with the first wave of updates going into a PR today.
System/Host Testing-Beijing
Core
- Parker Dingman: Created and presented slides for “Better Maps in JMP 19” dev talk. Video (and slides) of my dev talk can be found in JIRA issue JMP-21520.
- Xan: Map country name updates, smoother work, multiple response row state ability, lasso tool, box dispatch.
- Ernest: Working on supporting SiType::NumberFormat in preferences. Working on Find utility across Workflow steps.
Hosting and Interfaces
- Will Morgan: [JMP-21519] - The S3 Data Connector is in testing in Beijing, and it is almost ready for deployment to the JMP Marketplace. [JMP-22169] - In the meantime, I have started development of another data connector that will utilize the new python framework. This new connector will interface with the Microsoft Sharepoint platform and allow users to interact with their sharepoint data sources. Additionally, I am working on my JMP intern presentation and demo for everyone to see, so I hope you will all enjoy that!
- Paul N: Worked on Python updates
- Fixed JMP-22039 – jmp.DataTable() was setting DtFlags::Private even if table was not private.
- JMP-22064 – jmp.run_jsl() now returns the result of the topSubmit() instead of the success or failure status.
- JMP-21924 – Python equivalent to JSL Python Send() / Get(). The new functionality adds a jmp.globals which is a Python stand-in for the TopSymbolMap of global variables. Usage of this from Python is: value = jmp.globals[‘ variable name’] to get the JSL value as a Python Object. ( operates on same types as JSL Python Send() / Get ). And to set a JSL value from Python: jmp.globals[‘variable name’] = value.
- Fixed JMP-22167 – related to work above, crash after iterating across jmp.globals in Python.
- Working on JMP-20584 – so Python scripts running in projects can find files within the project.
- Kristen: Development this week was primarily loading Add-Ins to the JMP Marketplace stage environment, with progress being tracked in this epic JMPMRKT-106. If any JMP staff have any Add-Ins that aren’t in this epic for consideration for moving to the JMP Marketplace that they would like moved, please email me so I can get them added in for consideration.
