Any good examples for exporting DoE designs for Liquid Handlers?Hi All,
I have a customer that is using a liquid handler to do small volume/high-throughput DoE's with a liquid handler - they often have issues in transferring the design over to the robot as there's manual errors/mistakes as the design is carried over. I was curious if anyone has come across customers that have used JMP to automate the process of taking the design, understanding the 'Master Mixes' (stock solutions) and dispensing protocols for the robot. I'm aware that Synthace offers some of these capabilities but curious as how difficult it would be for an 'average' user to achieve this using things like Workflow Builder and basic JSL.
Cheers,
Ben
Re: Any good examples for exporting DoE designs for Liquid Handlers?Hi Ben,
I suspect this would be very doable using Workflow Builder provided the proper information was available and the users had an understanding of how the data should be organized to provide the proper design structure (I'm thinking split/strip plots in the case of well plates). It would be nice to see what kind of info these liquid handlers provide and the typical designs that customers use.

Re: Any good examples for exporting DoE designs for Liquid Handlers?Christian and I had a discussion some time ago about this same application. @christianstopp, I believe the customer was SPT Labtech. Do you remember how they resolved this issue?
Re: Any good examples for exporting DoE designs for Liquid Handlers?Hi @Ben_Ingham,
Years ago, before Synthace was available. David McClymont at Synbicite/London DNA Foundry was doing this. I don't know if those organisations still exist, or whether that work continues.
Dave moved to another company and it looks like he is at Revvity now. I assume he is still using JMP. He was always very approachable in the past.
Dave made it sound like turning JMP DOE instructions into robot instructions was a lot of work but maybe it is easier now. I know that he was lucky to have quite a bit of time to dedicate to this - your average industrial scientist would probably have a lot of other priorities.
Not sure how Workflow Builder could help. It feels a bit too specialised for that.
Hope this helps,
Phil

Quite the memory Nick! Ben, It's been a while now, but I've spoken with a couple customers about this, and a JMP Partner about such tools for, effectively, small- to mid-sized companies looking for the tool without the $ cost.
I've attached some content I created as a prototype after a customer demo, been a long time so had to dig it out. Some instructions are in the .jsl file, including values to use in the dialog box, and a bit more below. This was all before WFB so likely easier to achieve now.
From my note at the time:
- SampleData.jmp – the experimental design (including a couple extra columns), except as a .jmp data table
- Liquid Handler Design Conversion.jsl – a script file containing the JSL code
- ForLiquidHandler.csv – the output file after conversion
The workflow of the script:
- Creates a dialog box for the user to input parameter values, i.e. well plate size of the design, stock concentrations, and final volume
- Performs the necessary calculations to generate the corresponding volumes of each
- Transposes the new columns of volumes into the ‘well plate’ format needed for the liquid handler and exports an output .csv file.
Hope that helps provide a scope of some straightforward use of JSL (I was completely new to JSL at the time so shouldn't be too complex) and an example.
