Welcome to the JMP Development Update for May 17, 2024!
JMP QA teams in Cary and Beijing have finished vetting all JMP product installers for 18.0.1 and have signed off. Congratulations, all! While JMP has released “dot-dot” releases in prior cycles to address showstopper issues and major problems holding up major customer deployments, this is the first time we have purposefully scheduled a “dot-dot” security release to update third party libraries and packages and resolve showstopper bugs. JMP 18.0.1 will soon be replacing JMP 18.0 as the official shipping version in MyJMP. After 18.0.1 has been finalized, we will open an 18.0.2 track with a similar purpose – to collect third party updates and any showstopper fixes that cannot wait until the release of JMP 18.1 in July.
Development managers decided this week to delay the start of JMP 18.1 Approval Mode by two weeks (new date: 6/4/24) and delay our JMP 18.1 Code Freeze date (now 6/28/24) as well. This will permit more time for users to continue to adopt JMP 18.0 and report bugs to TS. There are over 200 issues in the JMP Jira project that are already marked accepted and closed with a fix version of JMP 18.1. We also have ~90 items currently in Test-Ready, Developing or Testing status with 18.1 in Planned Version, and ~180 marked Initiated but planned for 18.1. Thanks to those of you who triaged items this week to remove 18.1 from the Planned Version field on items not appropriate to fix in maintenance!
JMP 19 EA1 is planned to freeze on 5/31/24. Please continue to update your JMP 19 feature pages with content that can be shared with customers. Speaking of JMP 19 new features, thanks very much to Meichen Dong for volunteering to present at this week’s JMP Dev meeting on a new Causal Treatment personality for Fit Model. Meichen has been collaborating with John Sall, Elizabeth Claassen and others on this new addition and you can find more details in Confluence here. Also, if you missed the meeting, you can find a recording here.
Finally, thanks very much to JMP technical communications intern Abrah Furbee who shared this picture of the JMP interns in town for SAS Internpooloza this week! A very special thanks also to Audrey Shull, Andy Zhou and Beth Evans for helping coordinate welcoming events for our interns this week. We have a mix of returning interns and new additions and we’re glad to have them join us!

JMP Development Updates
Life Sciences Updates
- Wenjun: We were invited by the FDA Omics Working Group to join FDA data scientists to give the Data Science for Omics online courses for FDA reviewers. We had more than 200 reviewers join last Friday. Chris used 15 min to demo the function/results in JMP while Vikrant demoed SAS for 40 min. You can see that we are the only outside speakers invited and JMP was the only software that was used for demonstrating 6 times. The last session will be focused on AI/ML and will be taught by Russ.
- Drew: Continuing bug fixes for 18.1, including finally getting line styling and markers in patient profiles that visualize dates as present/missing, prior/ongoing flags and/or conflicts:
- Richard: Met with UNC students about projects for Forest Plot add-in and UpSet plot add-in. Created some scripts to take event data and annotate them to most closely occurring findings data. Met with individual who had suggested dynamic Kaplan-Meier plots for feedback.
Technical Support and Engagement
- Duane: Good news! We welcome a new support engineer, Joe Kolker. He is remote and working from northern California. He will be focusing on JMP Live, Python Integration, and various other systems areas. I’ve heard this week that thanks/kudos should be given to Dave Barbour for his assistance in several cases. We certainly appreciate all his help!

- ChrisB: Republished 18.0 help to get some fixes in. Working (still) on the 19.0 help build. Finished reviewing Khawar’s UG edits. Found some helpmap problems and talked to Melanie about them. Subsequently, started a job to compare helpmaps.
- Qiana: Worked on sample data tables for 18.1. Began reading through Using JMP Jiras for 18.1, to determine what needs to be documented. Project planning activities for JMP 18.0.1 and 18.1.
- Susan C: Working on JMP Live updates and Jira planning, Shannon L has been kind enough to help us!
System/Host Testing-Cary
- Mandy: This week has been busy testing the group columns and scripts features that Ernest pushed last Friday for JMP 19 – mostly running tests and trying different things, eliminating a few crashes and keeping track of changes. Currently trying to make a table file in Excel where I can list some things to try like from the Tables > menu option at 17.2 and 18.2 and 19.0 – and compare behaviors. (Grouping scripts happened in JMP 14, but only going back a few releases to see how things are handled. Also just keeping up with other diffs – a few I found looking at these things, that are not related to these pushes, but other pushes (JMP-21335).
- Audrey: Onboarding interns and finalizing JMP 18.0.1 testing.
System/Host Testing-Beijing
Core
- Dan S: Refactoring Border Box to use base class background color and border color and deprecating some older "FrameSides" flags in favor of the new properties. Retired the Scroller Tool, seldom used with current input devices. Fixed measuring issue in TabPageBox and selection issue in Show Tree Structure.
- Morgan: Fixed script editor crash via Close Window message. Fixed some Sentiment Analysis bugs. Fixed a bug in SE where deleting lines with code folding at top doesn’t work properly. Fixed Show Embedded Log SI example.
- Dave B: Worked with Jasean to figure out odd surface plot behavior, fixed table box row borders that had gaps, fixing colstack children vertical alignment, fixed a crash caused by table box where clause, and created a test case for an anonymous crash when running Oneway in 17.2.
- Parker: Wrote new anti-aliasing code for image smoothing (5x faster than original). Fixed map tiles not loading for OSM North Pole and Wrap-Around case. Changed zoomed out view to show 1 Earth instead of multiple.
- Evan: Working on JSS/VisualStyling performance. Lots of good progress there.
DOE and Reliability
- Congratulations to the DOE team this week! Their patent entitled Systems, Methods, and Graphical User Interfaces for Configuring Design of Experiments was issued as U.S. Patent No. 11,928,325 on 3/12/24.

Statistics
- Elizabeth: Added a catch for when we know the Unequal Variances repeated structure in Mixed is going to fail to converge due to lack of replication within blocks (JMP-21160). Fixed a bug (column wasn’t being hidden correctly) that became a crash (yikes!) after some of Ernest’s refactoring work when saving formulas in SVM when there’s a By group (JMP-21452). Testing that fix uncovered a different crash with Model Screening. Working on implementing an Offset role in GLMM for use with the Poisson distribution as in the GLM personality.
- John Sall: In Categorical, implemented FDR adjustments for cell comparisons (JMP-2012), added "Mean Std Error" option (JMP-21439), and moved some menu items to a submenu (JMP-21300). In Model Dialog, handle names that need quoting in clipboard operations (JMP-21364).
