SAS inventors came together April 29 at The Umstead Hotel for the 2023 Patent Dinner to celebrate ingenuity and innovation. The dinner marked 20 years of the annual celebration and, including the night’s patents awarded, brings the total
number of SAS patents to 829.
Of special note, JMP’s co-founder and chief Architect John Sall (@John_Sall) received his first patent at the ceremony.
Sall says applying for patents takes extra work to describe the inventions and review the patent applications. “I am very proud of all the inventing we do in software development, but I am especially proud that our division has produced a large number of patents for features in JMP,” he said. “The DOE and Reliability group has been especially productive, with several developers exceeding 20 patents, including five in a single year.”
In addition, Principal Research Statistician Developer Clay Barker (@clay_barker) is a patent committee member reviewing all the proposals.

“Congratulations and thank you to all the awardees,” Sall said. “I am happy to have gone through the process myself, with considerable help from colleagues and from the intellectual property team in the legal division at SAS.”
