Online Database ODBC ConnectionHello,
do somebody now if there is an online (on the internet) ODBC database (for free) that JMP can connect with. The purpose is that the customer can't install a database on its computer but wanna try an ODBC connection. If there is such database available, can you send me the link and how to connect?
Thanks a lot,
Valérie
Re: Online Database ODBC ConnectionA dead simple way for a customer to try ODBC would be to use an excel file as a database. The drivers are free or many times installed by default by IT. It's just the MS Access Driver. The customer just uses an excel file as their data source.
Another way they could do it is to use SQLite Database. The drivers are free (on windows) and the db is just a file that sits on their computer. This is the strategy I use to demo the ODBC connections. Really easy to set up and nearly bullet proof.
best,
M
Re: Online Database ODBC ConnectionHi Valérie,
I'm not an expert on this. But my simple understanding is that for an ODBC connection you need to have the ODBC driver installed on your machine. The customer will need to be able to install the ODBC driver on their machine. Unless they already have a driver installed that they can use.
I think it would be a good idea to find out more about what it is that they want to try out regarding ODBC connection. What do they need to see? There is nothing very interesting about it and it is more about their IT systems than it is about JMP. The value of JMP really is about what you can do when you have made the ODBC connection. And you can try the query builder tools on JMP tables.
If they can install the SQLite ODBC driver on their machine. then you could provide them with a SQLite database example. Or they could create their own. See this thread. A SQLite database it not a big file.
Cheers,
Phil
