Welcome to the JMP Development Update for May 3, 2024!
With final candidates now created, JMP 18.0.1 installer testing for all products is underway, and release notes for 18.0.1 are under review. JMP QA teams in Cary and Beijing expect to complete their testing matrices next week and sign off on 18.0.1. Once 18.0.1 becomes available, it will become the default shipping version of JMP 18.
Once 18.0.1 has been finalized, Jim will create a 18.0.2 release track and he, Jim, and Nick will replicate CI and nightly builds, installers and unit tests for the new track. Similar to 18.0.1, 18.0.2 will be open for third party library security fixes and critical bugs only.
By the way, John Sall asked me to share the following R&D department name updates, which I’ve used to rename some sections in the update below:
JMP R&D Core (formerly Data Discovery)
- JMP R&D DevOps
- JMP R&D DOE and Reliability
- JMP R&D Hosting, Interfaces, and Live
- JMP R&D Life Sciences
- JMP R&D Statistics
All of the JMP development teams remain busy with JMP 19 features and 18.1 fixes. Thanks very much to for all the help reviewing recent JMP 17.2 and 18.0 mystery crashes and customer issues coming through tech support, the community and the crash system! It’s very helpful to get common, non-showstopper issues resolved in time for consideration in 18.1.
Thanks very much to Clay Barker and Ryan Parker for presenting on new FDE features at this week’s JMP Dev meeting! If you were not able to attend in person, you can find the recording here. Audrey Shull was kind enough to host the meeting since I was traveling.
In the next few weeks, JMP is preparing to welcome a new group of summer interns! JMP HR, Audrey Shull and Andy Zhou have been helping to coordinate the plans for intern onboarding. Many SAS and JMP interns will be on campus for SAS Internpolooza and will meet with their JMP mentors and fellow interns (see schedule draft here). We will have a mix of remote and hybrid summer students.
Thanks to John Sall and Nicole Jones for sharing this nice photo of JMP team members attending the SAS Patent dinner at the Umstead! John reports that Joseph and Ryan got four patent plaques each, Yeng got two, John got one, and Clay was representing the patent committee. Caleb also received several but was remote. Congratulations to everyone!
Finally, thanks very much to Nicole Jones for sharing this picture of stat department team members who attended a teambuilding event at Burkett Farms recently!

JMP Development Updates
Core
- Xan: Added smoothed hex-grid jitter mode.
- Dave B: Fixed tab order with tableboxes, if boxes and span boxes caused problems. Fixed alignment grid problems saving as html and excel. Fixed a table box problem with if boxes and 2 line titles.
- Dan S: VisualStyling work, mostly work-in-progress on a branch, but a few pushes to main to refactor how PushPref works and refactoring BorderBox to use the base class background color property.
DOE and Reliability
- Caleb: Presented a dev tutorial on the new CSALT platform with Jacob Rhyne. We had great attendance and lots of good questions! Also finished up some paper reviews and continue work on improving the reverse-search behavior in the converted sample size explorers.
Host and Interfaces
- Kristen: Focused on performance improvements based on load testing that included enhancing caching on both the UI and API Marketplace services JMPMRKT-65 & JMPMRKT-29.
Interactive HTML
- John Powell: Attended Intern Manager Training. Completed Trust and Inspire management course. Helped Duane investigate a customer’s JMP Live issue(WEBJMP-8489). Re-organized confluence pages and created new ones to help coordinate our load time performance improvement work. Investigate load time performance of markers(JMPHTML-13704). Submitted a JMP Runner build to test new JavaScript syntax with Dave B.’s updated HTML regression tools. It worked! Looked at an issue for Dieter where an incorrectly configured column switcher published to JMP Live wasn’t functioning. Met with Dieter, Praveena, and Paul to plan features for JMP 19.
- Michael Senoyuit: Worked on performance profiling bars and histogram along with fixing some of the performance testing scripts.
JMP Live
- Aurora: 18.1: Loosen restrictions on space admins looking at package access records. 19.0: Control chart warning improvements (support changing triage status, audit log triage activity, suppress notifications for fully-triaged charts).
Statistics
- Response Screening - "Fit Selected" command now calls GenReg if Poisson or Neg Binomial (if JMPPro), Generalized Linear Model otherwise (JMP-21254).
- Categorical has relocated some cell options to a submenu, including the new confidence interval items (JMP-21300).
- Categorical now has confidence intervals for the means and includes more statistics in the Save Means output table (JMP-21318).
- P&G's Emma Keeling is reprioritizing many of their Categorical requests, with more new emphasis on the ability to reformat output summaries.
- Annie: Finalized work with Di Michelson and Bill Woodall to develop methods and formulas for the Short Run Standardized XBar/R chart with unequal subgroup sizes, for both the estimate of the overall average range and for the adjusted control limits. Now that the work is finished, and Di has been running simulations to confirm the efficiency of the calculations, I pushed the change to main (Jira JMP-20221).
- Laura C-S: Got back to working on the MIIV-2SLS estimator for SEM; fixed a couple of issues with equality constrains and still working on the extensions to make multiple-group analysis work properly. Set up a meeting with Ken Bollen (proponent of this estimator) to get feedback in current UI implementation and functionality. Integrated a few bug fixes to 18.1 for bootstrap. Replied to Prof. Fred Oswald (Rice University) who requested information on SEM model shortcuts.
- Laura L: Finished up work on expanding the comparison methods for Compare Slopes in some of the modeling platforms by using the Multiple Comparisons framework for more functionality. See More Comparisons for Compare Slopes for more details. Also started working on adding grouping columns to the Process Capability platform.
Stat Documentation
- Michael C: Triaged some outstanding 18.1 doc Jiras; reviewed SI and doc changes for Colleen; finalized stat strings for 18.1 string handoff.
Stat Testing
- Mark: Evaluated open DOE tickets for their technical risk, impact, and ease of implementation for JMP 19 planning with Ryan, Joseph, and Jacob. Attended SAS Lunch and Learn session about open source software. Developing a prototype of a new platform for Bayesian optimization with Chris. Helped Evan with design and analysis of an experiment to quantify dependence of compute time with Jacob. Answered questions in JMP Community.
- Jacob: Finishing scripts to automatically re-run failing unit tests and helping James Koepfler get this framework set up on his Windows machine. Updating Categorical unit tests to account for the new mean score confidence intervals. Attending Caleb’s CSALT developer tutorial and helping with Q&A.
- Tonya: Preparing for an early adopter presentation for testing. Bug verification. Unit test rewrites. Answered user community question about asymmetric limits.
Life Sciences Updates
- Richard: Working on a survival report that has animation over time and switches between various summary measures (including restricted mean survival time) on the second y-axis.
- Drew: Continued work on 18.1 bugs and features for 19.0. Triage and address various customer issues.
Product Management and Product Marketing
- Bryan F: This week Sarah Sylvestre and I met with SE Jordan Hiller to discuss challenges users have working with JMP data tables. We also we used a Miro whiteboard to process data obtained from a larger group of SEs about JMP data table challenges. Met with Michael Goff and Landra Robertson to do the final string review for JMP Live. Finally, I worked on further detailing layout changes for HTML5 and creating a Figma prototype of potential style options within JMP.
Technical Support and Engagement
- Duane: Wendy has a new person on her team! Dawn Sekelsky joined Tuesday and will be assisting with Engagement issues. She will be working remotely from Florida, but will be working pacific time zone hours after some initial training. Wendy, “the Wizard”, also contributed to the What’s new: The JMP Store and My JMP article with Falco. Here, they discuss various issues related to the JMP Store.
- Case volume is still high, but the Support teams are keeping our customers happy! By far, the most common questions for JMP 18 are around getting it up and running (installation, crashes, My JMP, and authorization) but we are getting questions about importing, graph builder, and python integration. I’m sure usage questions will increase as more customers adopt the newest release.
- Here are the TS JMP Live reports and the link to the Jira filter showing the tickets reported by TS for the last 14 days.

Development Operations
- Nick:
- Installed Visual Studio 2022 update 17.9.6 on Windows 19.0 CI and Analysis machines and performed a full rebuild of each to avoid any compiler errors after update.
- After the Visual Studio update, spent some time troubleshooting the 19.0 Windows Analysis build to determine if the csa-scripts were assigning the correct P4 users after a large number of warnings were generated thanks to the new compiler. Michael confirmed the script is working as designed, and emails are being assigned per line change, and not to the person who last touched the file, as I previously thought. Better overall understanding of the Analysis projects thanks to this week's discussion, though.
- Looked into faster Windows Visual Studio/msbuild multithreading settings to speed up the CI and nightly build process, after testing a few configurations for the r7a class machines in AWS, we shaved a few minutes off a full build, which with a Perforce sync is now averaging around 20 minutes, and incremental builds remain very quick averaging in the minutes.
- Updated Mac Monterey JMP lab machine and fixed Perforce connectivity issues on both mdh375 and mdh378 as well.
- Bob: Worked to resolve performance issues with 18 AWS build machine in the copying of files. Updated JMP Pro Live installers to match codes of JMP Pro installers (Windows). Created 18.0.1 installer validation benchmarks for JMP, JMP Pro, JMP Clinical (Windows). Added JMP Pro Live installer creation and JMP Live zip/exe creation to AWS build machine. Worked with John Schroedl to update VC Redistributable used in version 19 (Windows). Created 18.0.1 signoff page for Development.
- Shannon L: Helped the Doc team create a project plan for the Oxygen project, with Jira views for dependencies and timelines; assisted with Crash report investigations; reviewed upcoming changes by Atlassian for Jira and Confluence.
- Jim: Built JMP 18.0.1 and final installer candidate#1. Processed LEAKS JMP 19.0 unit test results and reported JIRAs. Worked with Daniel Powell on JMP-21234 for daily UT run authorization.
Localization
- Allison: Worked on preparing 18.1 JMP Live UI, Installer, and Keycloak localization projects for handoff. Looked at the different pieces of the GPO project with Trish to prepare for localization and getting localization tools set up; responded to translation queries regarding strings in JMP Documentation from linguists; sent out production packages of 18.1 JMP Live UI, Installer, and Keycloak to our vendors for localization.
- Krzysztof: Running Stringbot job (test and production) for 18.1 in preparation for localization hand off. Debugging and fixing Stringbot problem that showed up on the 2nd of May. Preparing memoQ projects for JMP Live (webjmp, keycloak and installer). Fix to terminology database.
- Howard: Released l10n image diff job to allow comparing files with label. Released l10n book populate job to allow files with label. Worked on l10n Dashboard dB build:
- Sandy: Finished testing various file validation apis. Continued testing populate source job with labels. Began testing Jira apis. Continuing work on file validation project test suite.
- Sohail: Finished updates to the TM search tool interface. Continued research on LLM solution.

- Mandy: Completed 18.0.1 installer testing on the Mac. Worked on a few JIRA’s – testing and verifying. Working with some of the data Clay shared, to test data table changes made by David White.
- Lisa G: Wrapping up 18.0.1 installer testing and will be continuing updates to the telemetry dashboard.
Web Testing – Cary
- Josh L: JMP Live 18.0.1 Installer testing. So far we have had to rebuild due to mismatched notices and an incorrect GUID for JMP Live 18.0.1. I managed to get a few Jira’s closed this week. I also answered some of the Live customer deployment questions.
- Anna: Testing local data filter functionality in JMP Live. Continuing testing to confirm HTML5 team refactoring updates didn’t cause regressions. Continued testing of Dan’s most recent changes for Group platform.

Note from Shannon
Well, the conversation about this license plate continues…in Jira! I think if this works, John Powell is going to be looking into a new vanity plate…I’m betting on JMP-2343. :smiling_face_with_smiling_eyes:
Hope you all have a great weekend!
