Welcome to the JMP Development Update for April 5, 2024!
Happy belated birthday to JMP CEO Jon Weisz (April 1) and Founder and Chair John Sall (April 4)! They both appreciate a good joke so that early April timing always seems fitting to me. :smiling_face_with_smiling_eyes: I almost fell for Diana’s April Fools story on Inside JMP on Monday - it was especially convincing when I read it on a text-only email lacking the AI-generated pictures. And if you missed the shoe-related April Fools story on InsideSAS, you can find it here. As most of you probably know, SAS Shoes (the company) is actually already a thing! There are really too many joke posts from this week to share just a few, but I especially liked one I saw about Michael Jordan returning to professional basketball after 20+ years and this post about the various options companies face with respect to responding to April 1 (complete with some silly links to tech related posts and videos).
All kidding aside now, as more customers begin to adopt JMP 18, development and product management are finally starting to get a peek at anonymously submitted telemetry from non-EA customers. There is a dashboard available in JMP Live here to track the latest submissions and Evan has published this JMP add-in for developers to browse detailed data directly in JMP. We have many people to thank for enabling the telemetry feature in the product and helping support it – just to name a few, product management for advocating for it and working with JMP legal (thank you!) to make this happen, David White, John Schroedl, Brian Corcoran and Evan McCorkle for development work, Myron Chandler for database support, Nan Wu for telemetry infrastructure testing, and Lisa Grossman for post-database data wrangling and JMP Live publishing. Apologies if I am leaving anyone out – enabling telemetry has definitely been a big group effort across development and many other groups! I think collecting this data will pay off as we continue to build intelligence about JMP customer and trial usage patterns. Similar efforts for crash data colelction have certainly paid off over the years in helping us detecting common issues earlier, quickly find sets of related reports and connect repeat crashes to known issues and improve the overall stability of JMP products.
Thanks very much to Melanie Drake for writing the update while I was OOTO last week! And also thanks very much to John Sall for presenting at the dev meeting last Thursday. If you missed that meeting, you can click this link to find his recorded JMP Dev presentation on Response Screening and Fit Response Screening, slices and subgroups. If you’d like to present at an upcoming dev meeting, please sign up in Confluence here.

JMP Development Updates
Life Sciences Updates
- Richard: Engaging two UNC students in unpaid summer internships to develop some JMP add-ins (one of which may become an undergraduate honors thesis) - an update to the Forest Plot add-in to make it more amenable to user modifications and address some deficiencies, and an UpSet Plot add-in to examine subgroup factors and their interactions. Also shared various prototypes with the larger Life Sciences team for feedback prior to further development:
- Dual forest plots. Includes a switch between time within treatment (as shown) or treatment within time (which can also be used for subgroups in lieu of time) and a switch for reference treatment to change the treatment comparison in the right frame.
- A report to summarize questionnaire data.
- A report to screen and summarize multiple subgroups factors and their interactions to assess treatment heterogeneity. This utilizes John Sall’s updates to Response Screening.
- A report to assess duration of co-occurrence of events or interventions that utilizes the Association platform. Further work may incorporate aspects of the Multivariate platform.
Technical Support and Engagement
- Wendy: Another busy week among the Support teams! Several members of Tech Support wanted to extend sincere appreciation to the JMP development team. The following people were mentioned specifically for going above and beyond this week: Bryan Boone, Dan Schikore, Daniel Powell, and Caleb King. The Engagement team met with Kyoko Takenaka to discuss JMP 18 and how to find information in Salesforce. Here are the TS JMP Live reports and the link to the Jira filter showing the tickets reported by TS for the last 14 days.

- Jim: Integrated approved change into the 18.0.1 branch; provided additional Perforce support. Reported numerous JIRAs for leaks and assertion failures encountered in the latest UT run. Updated machine OS for Russ’s mac mini, resulting in the ability to gain remote access (thanks to Russ and Paul for assistance). Met with Nick Ruva, Melanie and Shannon Conners to work through issues associated with AWS unit test machine shutdowns.
- Bob: Met with Brian and Jim to begin strategy for creating JMP Pro for Live. This will need new nightly executable builds and new installers. Prototype looks good and work will continue. Added approved new license agreements to version 19 installers. Work will continue with updates to license agreements with Legal team.
- Myron: Worked on JMPTOOL-1108 and related tickets – preparing the JiraBot UI and server for deployment. JiraBot owner updates (JMPTOOL-1148, JMPTOOL-1142). Removed script memory-related fields from the database for ASAN and other large tests (JMPTEST-1172).
- Shannon: Prepared for and held onboarding meetings with new DevOps program manager Shannon Leslie. Attended first Managers Circle meeting. Reviewed progress on Windows unit test runs in Jenkins with Jim, Nick and Melanie. Investigated numerous JMP 18 late-beta and production mystery crashes, entered a few JMPTEST items for investigation, and added case numbers, anonymous links and comments to existing issues. Thanks to Dan S for helping replicate a Graph Builder/column switcher issue reported by a late EA user (JMP-21035)! Reported and verified tooling and process related Jira issues.
- Melanie: Jirabot 3.0: added new field to production Jira; added new automation rules. General Tooling: helping diagnose various automation problems.
Localization
- Trish: Triage of localization queries. Project planning for 18.1 schedules and contracts. Prep agenda for monthly documentation and localization team meeting. Reviewed over 18.1 strings stuck in Stringbot that were assigned to our friend Generic JMP Builder Account, hunted down the developers and sent emails asking them to please review. Conversations to move translation support of JMP Clinical to Localization team are underway. Short meet and greet session with Shannon Leslie.
- Allison: Tested out automation of localized Add-in creation and reported issues to Howard. Submitted WO requests to JMP Legal. Responded to translators’ queries on strings from Big Books and shared relevant information with all translation teams. Began preparing for 18.1 UI localization – updating quote templates, Jiras, and memoQ projects.
- Krzysztof: Doing a localization study for JMP Marketplace; finished retraining JMP MT models with the latest JMP translation data, SAS translations + public data from Legal domain; shared the MT models access APIs with JMP Live and Marketing, handling ongoing localization projects (pushing files, confirming TMs) and implementing small fixes (corrections related to spaces); generated word count data for the scope of 18.1 updates to UI.
- Howard: Released two automation jobs for creating Add-ins, side note for this: JMP Community only allows an upload size up to 175M. The localized Add-ins are now ~170M in sized. In the process of releasing Dashboard dB build that’s targeted in end of May.
- Sohail: implementing enhancements to TM Search application. Working on automation for handling of tmx files.

Note from Shannon
Thanks to Melanie Drake for sharing some details about the upcoming solar eclipse –
Get ready for some sky-gazing next week – the Triangle will see a partial solar eclipse (about 78.4%) starting around 1:58pm and ending around 4:29pm, with the maximum at around 3:15pm. You kept your glasses from a few years ago, right?
https://xkcd.com/2816/
And thanks to Audrey Shull for sharing this graphic of sold out AirBnB’s next week along the eclipse path of totality. I hear that Niagara Falls NY is going to be a madhouse – and to add to the excitement, my sister (who lives in central NY) reported that they had a low-level earthquake today (4.8). Hopefully everyone will enjoy some safe sky-gazing on Monday afternoon. Have a great weekend, all!
