Welcome to the JMP Development Update for March 22, 2024!
This week JMP 18 was released to many existing customers on My JMP! You can find all the details on the phased rollout of all JMP products through all channels to all customers here on Inside JMP. Rolling out the software in phases has already helped identify a few minor issues impacting select customers – issues that have since been resolved thanks to Daniel Powell and the Salesforce team. Cary based folks celebrated the release of JMP 18 at a Wednesday evening reception in the building A café where John Sall spoke about the many P’s of JMP 18. It was a positively perfect evening!
Thanks to Brian Corcoran for sharing that there is currently a major issue with JMP staff members being able to authorize JMP 18 products on the Mac via SSO. Fortunately, this is not an issue that impacts customers because we do not enable SSO for customer use. This problem was caused when SAS IT changed some settings within SSO by installing a new Microsoft authentication package. This apparently affected the ability of the Mac Webkit that is embedded within JMP to share cookies, preventing MyJMP from properly forwarding authorization requests. It is not possible for CIS to back out the changes.
Chris Humphrey has kindly created this page in Confluence to detail a work-around that internal Mac users can use to authorize. Please stay tuned for more information about a long-term solution as it becomes available. If you have previously authorized JMP 18 on the Mac, that authorization should continue to work until your next hard check in date (~180 days after authorization). Therefore, please do not remove an existing, working authorization, if you already have one. If you have not authorized 18 yet, please follow Chris’ work-around instructions above.
Thanks very much to Dan Schikore for presenting at this week’s JMP Dev meeting! Dan presented on display box changes in progress for JMP 19 that will support future visual styling updates. Also, big thanks to Dan’s coding collaborators Evan McCorkle and John Schroedl who helped monitor the very active meeting chat! If you missed the meeting, you can find a recording here.
Thanks also to Tonya Mauldin for sharing the Beta/crash cases for the past two weeks with crashes selected.

JMP Development Updates
Host
- Paul N:
- First week back after Manchester, and a week-long vacation in London. The updated Python Integration was a big hit at the conference. There was a steady stream of people at ‘Meet the Experts’ that wanted to know more about the updates. And at every social event, I had no lack of companionship from attendees seeking to ask about the Python developments. All the feedback was very positive. Lots of the customers were eager to get their hands on 18!
- Of the issues I need to look at is being able to disable the Python Install Package() functionality for JMP installed into more secure environments. They still want to use Python but not allow users to install new packages. n such installations, the administrator would need to provide a vetted, site-packages/ directory that would be placed on the user’s machine in the user’s JMP location.
- This week the issue of allowing Python refresh scripts on JMP Live has been a topic of discussion. The key issue is figuring out how we can support this without compromising the security of the JMP Live server instance. The first facet of this is restricting package installs down to the server administrators without the scripts themselves being able to install packages.
- On Thursday I gave a webinar presentation ‘Developer Tutorial: New Python Integration and Scripting Capabilities in JMP 18’ set up and hosted by Gail Massari.
- John Schroedl: Added padding and chrome calculations to tree control; moving on to filter field. Helping diagnose SSO issue affecting Mac authorizations. Removed python integration info from Install Checker.
Interactive HTML
- John Powell: Converted ImageSegment, SpacerBox, Scaling, ParallelAxisSegment and PolylineSegment to JavaScript Classes (JMPHTML-13568, JMPHTML-13582, JMPHTML-13583, JMPHTML-13581). Integrated fixes into JMP 18.1 (JMPHTML-1691, JMPHTML-13561, JMPHTML-13560). Reviewed Feature Requests with Praveena and Paul to plan for JMP 19. Q1 check-ins.
- Paul Spychala: Spent the week working with the HTML team in transitioning our codebase to use ES6 Classes. Also spent time discussing HTML UI Design and how we can better match JMP Live in overall look and feel.
- Mike Stickles: Completed work on JMPHTML-13588 (refactoring the HTML LegendBox class to use ES6 classes). Completed ACT-Now training.
- Michael Senoyuit: Worked on refactoring TooltipModel and Annotation into EA6 Classes.
JMP Live

- Adrianna: Working on authorization changes and improving how we handle data tables that require a lot of memory.
Statistics
- John Sall:
- In Fit Response Screening, if you had a character grouping column, then that grouping column in the Means Difference report for was the wrong size; it is fixed in 18.1/19.0 and proposed for 18.0.1 (JMP-20674). In Response Screening, various fixes for subgrouping (JMP-20628).
- In Mixture Profiler, provide a "Number of Grid Points" argument to allow higher resolution (reported by Johnson Mathey) (JMP-20749).
- In Fit Response Screening, more fixes for continuous random effects that does not have mean zero. Now I center them before fitting (JMP-20758).
- In Fit Response Screening, provide labels even if convergence fails (JMP-19625).
- In Logistic, add Confidence Intervals (JMP-20771).
- In Model Screening, fixes for Folded prediction columns for by groups, using suffixes to the names (JMP-19708).
- In Fit Response Screening, it is now starting to support Subgrouping, similar to Response Screening. For example, if you fit Age to sex and marital status for all rows, then for each country, then for each size, then for each type. This was requested by Richard Zink for the subgroup initiative (JMP-20855).
- Laura C-S: Finished producing a 6-minute video that showcases all existing SEM functionality—I’m super excited to share it next week with the SEMNET listserv, where I hope lots of SEM users who haven’t heard from us yet will have a chance to do so. Continued making progress with the new MIIV-2SLS estimator in SEM; I finally got the numbers on a report! There’s still a ton of work to do but I looove seeing the numbers outside of my debugger. Here’s a little preview,
