Five Go-To DemosI've heard a few SE folks talk about having 5 GoTo Demos that they have ready-to-go at all times. Since we've got so many new SE's (and I include myself in that count), I thought it might be nice if the old-timers shared how that works, and what those 5 "go to's" might look like.
Thanks for helping us be better SE's!
Re: Five Go-To DemosJerry,
Agree with what folks have already described as "performance"
My five (six) go to Journals over the years were easy to "perform" since I was involved with most of them.
1.) Tablet Case Study-(Malcolm Moore) Pharma Manufacturing Case Study
2.) Cyan Coupler Case Study-Chemical Manufacturing Case Study on Coupler 76FU
3.) OLED Case Study-Vapor Deposition DOE for test variability reduction
4.) Novomer DSD Case Study-Polymer Manufacturing
5.) Kitchen Sink DOE Case Study-Chemical Crystallization showing flexibility of Custom DOE
6.) Mixture DOE Case Study Journal (includes Blue Haze constrained Mixture)
Re: Five Go-To DemosHi-
Mine are similar to what has already been said:
-Tablet: Getting Started/Graphical Analysis/Fitting Basic Models
-Tablet DOE or Semiconductor DOE: emphasizes the importance of Custom DOE or DSD vs. traditional DOEs
-Boston Housing data for JMP Pro. I also now have one for Pigment Milling for Pro for manufacturing.
-Hospital Costs for Visualizations/Dashboards/Interactive Reports
I guess I only have a top 4!
Re: Five Go-To DemosI'm echoing everything @MikeD_Anderson already wrote. Performing can't be understated IMO. My first AE, Mike Drake, told me like week 1 on the job, "Peter, they have to buy us before they buy the software." And it's through a performance as such that I think helps this happen. How to? Aggressively put into your demo that you have 'lived in their shoes'. One way to accomplish this is to tell 'slice of life stories' that resonate WITH the participants pain points, challenges, and triumphs (include these too so you can show how you/your team prevailed)!
So in every single one of my demos, Explorer events, JMP Day presentations/workshops, etc. I ALWAYS lead with what Bart Queen called a 'grabber' and I finish with a 'closer'. These have little to do with the software itself...but everybody relates to them as relevant and meaningfull. It might be my NASCAR video (for showing process mayhem) or my "Precision" ski jump video into the small swimming pool. But I always show these.
The only other stock demo that @MikeD_Anderson didn't mention that I use often is centered around the health care clinical care delivery process and because we call on a fair number of hospital and clinical care providers so the Diabetes.jmp data table is well suited for that. My demo content for that is included in the content @malcolm_moore1 links too above.
Re: Five Go-To DemosMine are all set up with common characteristics:
- I can cover JMP or JMP Pro in the same journal/data set
- I can cover the basics really well (GB, Dist, FYbX, Recode, etc.)
- They are general within a particular domain (manufacturing, health care, marketing, finance, etc.)
- If at all possible they are publicly available, on the community, or part of the standard JMP data sets. (In case I need to borrow a laptop for some reason)
- (most importantly) I've practiced with them to the point I can throw down a decent demo on a couple hours sleep with a raging headache operating on cold meds, caffeine, and a prayer - without a journal or any talking points. (worst case scenario)
I can't stress that last point enough. In addition to being technical people, SE's are professional public speakers - we're performers after a fashion. We need to practice our material the way any other professional performer does. The content and the SE's familiarity with the content are equally important - my bias is to say familiarity is more so. You can throw down a solid demo with Big Class in a pinch, but only if you've prepared by knowing the material really well before hand.
All that said - my go to's are:
1. White Vinyl / Tablet: Manufacturing
2. Hospital Costs: General JMP and Healthcare
3. Microbial Growth: Process and DOE in Healthcare
4. US Honey Production: General JMP
5. Credit Card Risk: Finance and Marketing (because of the demographics info)
6. Big Class Families (if all else fails)
Best,
M
Re: Five Go-To DemosHi Jerry,
You might want to check what was presented at JMP Academy the week after kick-off
