Addressing race relations in the United States and beyond, because black lives matter.
"Even an institution that wants to change itself can’t overcome its architecture," said Shalia Dewan, a New York Times reporter covering criminal justice. "And this is why you see the rage on the streets."
On the June 2, 2020 episode of The Daily podcast, Dewan talked about the systems that protect the police in America, specifically in Minneapolis. It was in Minneapolis that a police officer used tactics that killed George Floyd, and it was that killing that has sparked outrage and frustration across the country.
Like many of us, John Sall and other JMP leaders have expressed outrage at racial injustice. He recommends that you listen to The Daily podcast for insight into why things are the way they are. Sall also endorses SAS’ social media posts, as well as this week's internal message from Jim Goodnight. If you missed that e-mail, it said:
The past few months have been incredibly difficult. Acts of social injustice have sparked anxiety, anger, sadness, and helplessness. These emotions are compounded by the uncertainty, stress and isolation many have also endured as a result of the pandemic.
Please know that SAS is a safe place to work, and we are here to support you. SAS was founded on the principle that all people matter and we have always firmly stated that no one should suffer discrimination for any reason. We work hard to cultivate this behavior; we make every attempt to lead to our values.
To our employees who are hurting, we stand with you. And, we have resources to support you, including those available through our Employee Assistance Program and Work/Life group. We ask everyone to show compassion and empathy. Take a moment to learn more about the many inclusion groups at SAS.
We will continue the dialogue on this topic. We encourage everyone to reach out with questions, suggestions or input.
-- Jim Goodnight
As Dr. Goodnight invites all SAS employees to explore those important resources, John Sall invites JMP employees to continue the conversation and let leadership know what you need. Leave suggestions, questions, anything you want below in the Comments section. Or reach out to Diana Levey, who will collect feedback and bring it to the leadership team.
@Diana_Levey or anyone else close to kickoff planning - Is there a plan to continue this conversation next week at kickoff? Would love to hear more about what JMP is doing/continuing to do as a division to support the BLM movement in 2021.
thank you for sharing diana!
