I34 - Must Do's for JMP DemosHi all,
Here is my collected wisdom over the years. Feel free to edit and augment based on your experience.

Must-Do’s for JMP Demos
For all “Intro to JMP” or “Getting Started with JMP” sessions
- always show graph builder and how easy it is to build a graph.
- always show saving a script to the data table and how easy it is to recreate analysis.
- always show getting data into JMP and how easy that is. I usually cut and paste from an excel file since this is the most common. I only show query builder if the customer mentions using a database.
- always show saving and sharing results. Copy and paste into an email message is quick and easy.
- show the power of the distribution platform for exploring data.
- illustrate dynamic linking of data and all relevant graphs (distribution is a great way to show this).
- mention the concept of the quick default analyses – no need to specify everything you want in advance.
- illustrate the drill down and successive disclosure of UI features through red triangle and right click (which is why the quick default analysis works).
- illustrate adjusting axis settings (and histogram bin size) by dragging the mouse and how easy this is to do.
For Minitab users
- always show changing the histogram bin size by dragging the mouse
- always show fitting a distribution, then refitting to a different distribution without having to back all the way out and redo the analysis.
For Excel Users
- always show stacking columns, this can very painful in Excel when there are several long columns. Then make the point that JMP has real data manipulation functions like splitting, joining, updating, concatenating and SQL. I just point them out and don’t show examples because it can be overwhelming. Joining and updating are also very painful in Excel, vlookup() works on one column at a time.
- always show distribution and fit Y by X. Fit a distribution and fit a curve or spline. Graphics are pretty basic in Excel.
- always show recode, fixing data in Excel is hard to do (Find & Replace)
- keep in mind with Excel it’s easy (because they already know it) and free (because they already have it) but it’s limiting what they can do. Try to get the customer to tell you things that JMP will save time to overcome the cost issue, an hour saved per week will pay for JMP.
- beware of the crazy, complicated, impossible spreadsheet question. Try to defer these to a later one-on-one session. If a large group has the same problem, mention JMP can solve complicated, multi-step problems with customized applications using JSL. Workflow builder will make this easy to show.
For Manufacturing Teams
- always show the big picture platforms, they are really great
- show control chart builder, then Process Screening
- show capability chart, then Process Capability
- always show data mining for root cause analysis
