2023 marks the 12th year of our Academic User Survey. Each October, Senior Systems Engineer Kevin Potcner, a member of the Academic Team, sends a survey to learn where and how JMP is being used in academia around the globe. This year’s results were our best as we heard from nearly 1,600 new faculty instructors and researchers that we’ve never heard from before, a 45% increase over last year. Included in these responses are more than 1,400 new courses that have adopted JMP and nearly a thousand researchers using JMP as their primary data analysis software.
In total, we are now aware of more than 9,000 faculty and researcher users at 2,500 different colleges and universities in over a hundred different countries. While usage is found in a diverse range of academic fields over half are found in the life sciences and engineering departments.
The Course Use dashboard in Salesforce (JMP Dashboards > Academic > Students) will be updated soon with this new information. This dashboard lets you see where JMP is being used and what courses are being taught with it. You can drill down by country or in the US, by state, to see JMP use at universities near you.

Founded in 1848, the University of Mississippi, affectionately known as Ole Miss, is Mississippi's flagship university and recently acquired a JMP Academic Suite campus-wide license. Senior Global Academic Program Manager Pany Allen (@pany_allen) worked with James Cizdziel, Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, who was instrumental in securing the license and in helping other departments see what JMP can do for them. He plans to use JMP Pro in his Advanced Instrumental Analysis course as well as a Biology statistics course taught by multiple faculty. Additional courses include the Ecology of Plant Communities course and graduate student research. Professor Barry Babin, Marketing Research author and advocate of JMP, plans to introduce JMP Pro to faculty and students at the Ole Miss Business School.
Georgia Tech is consistently ranked among the top five engineering universities in the United States, and its Aerospace Systems Design Laboratory (ASDL), led by Distinguished Professor Dimitri Mavris, includes 50 scientists and 300 students, all of whom use JMP Pro extensively in their training and research. Systems Engineer Ross Metusalem (@Ross_Metusalem) recently led a half-day workshop for 50 ASDL members where techniques for data visualization, advanced linear modeling, time series analysis, and structural equation modeling (SEM) were covered. SEM motivated further discussion of expanding ASDL’s use of JMP Pro, with attendees exploring its potential to test competing theories regarding causality in complex aerospace systems.

After attending a JMP DOE webinar, Dr. Pavel Zalenovskii from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Aveiro, Portugal, contacted Senior Global Academic Program Manager Paolo Chiappa (@paolo_chiappa) to explore how JMP could fit into their courses and research projects. After a successful academic workshop with 30 attendees, they adopted JMP Student Subscription to start their journey with Custom Design and other relevant tools. After their initial use of JMP Student, they acquired an Academic Suite license with JMP Pro in November to extend coverage to other departments both for teaching and research. They were supported with a Getting Started workshop earlier this month.

Founded in 1481 as a College of Theology, The University of Genova has grown over the centuries to become one of Italy's largest universities, with nearly 40 departments and 40,000 students. In 2018, Chiappa noticed a growing interest in JMP’s webinars from professors and researchers in Chemical Engineering, Health Sciences, and Pharmaceutical Sciences. After Volker Kraft led two onsite workshops in 2018 and 2019, progress on JMP’s adoption seemed to stall. Persistence paid off when, in the summer of 2023, a new champion was identified and collaboration with key faculty was brokered resulting in a new campus-wide academic suite license at this historic institution.

The JMP Academic team joined forces with The Centre of Excellence for Biopharmaceutical Technology (CBT) at IIT Delhi, India to enhance their Annual Learning Series. An immersive hands-on JMP workshop focused on the Design of Experiments (DOE). This event brought together a diverse audience, including professors, researchers, and industry professionals. Throughout the day-long workshop, participants delved into both the theoretical foundations and practical applications of DOE. The sessions, led by our own Senior Systems Engineer Muralidhara Anandamurthy (@Muralidhara), blended insightful discussions on theoretical concepts with engaging hands-on exercises, leveraging the capabilities of JMP software. This dual emphasis ensured a comprehensive understanding of DOE principles, making it a valuable experience for all attendees.

Tsinghua University hosted the 2023 Annual Conference, Institute for Quality & Reliability, in October which brought together academia and industry for a symposium on the practice of reliability. Senior Global Academic Program Manager Clare Zhang (@Clare) reports that JMP was the only commercial sponsor and more than 300 attendees at the event showcased JMP’s strengths in reliability and industrial statistics and elevated the JMP brand. Three separate presentations were made by JMP commercial customers highlighting contemporary challenges in consumer electronics and battery development with several JMP platforms including degradation analysis. JMP Systems Engineer Weihua Li (@WeihuaLi) delivered the presentation, "From Simulation to Decision: Reliability Applications Based on JMP” where he emphasized the significance of JMP software in improving system reliability and supporting enterprise decision-making.
