Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed in the US on the third Monday of January each year. It honors the legacy and memory of civil rights leader Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose actual birthday is Jan. 15. You can learn more about King at the King Center website.
To honor Dr. King's legacy, JMP offices in the US will be closed on Jan. 15. If you choose to honor Dr. King's legacy on this day by volunteering and serving your community, please send photos to Allison Hines (@AllisonHines) to share on InsideJMP. You can also post to your professional social media account using the hashtag #JMPLife.
“Everybody can be great because everybody can serve.” - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Dr. King lived a life of sacrifice and service and shared an understanding that our interconnectedness is necessary to change the world for the better.
Like King, we believe that service to others makes the world a better place and actively encourage our employees to get involved in their communities. One way of doing this, in the US, is through our Volunteer Time Off (VTO) program. The VTO program is designed to allow eligible employees an opportunity to engage in meaningful and purposeful volunteerism that helps those in need.
Although SAS has made education its primary philanthropic focus, employees are encouraged to give their time and talents to programs for which they have a strong affinity. Employees may use VTO to volunteer for any eligible charity, cause, or nonprofit organization of their choosing.
By allowing employees time off to volunteer, we can continue to invest in our local communities and have a meaningful impact on the world around us one community at a time. For non-US-based employees, please reach out to your local HRBP to inquire about volunteer programs in your region.
Ways to serve:
- Donate books, clothes, or school supplies to a local charity.
- Visit an assisted living home.
- Volunteer at a shelter, rescue mission, or hospital.
