Welcome to the JMP Development Update for December 15, 2023!
JMP 18 Approval Mode is planned to wrap up in mid-January. Once 18.0 work is completed on 1/16/23, we will branch for 18.0.1 and 18.1. The JMP 19.0 branch will be created to match source in main as of the end of the day on 12/20/23. Thanks in advance for your patience as teams get all the various new processes up and running!
JMP QA teams in Cary and Beijing have been reviewing the Windows JMP Pro and JMP Clinical EA7 installers with no major issues found so far. Mac JMP Pro installers are still being tested and JMP Clinical work Mac installers are in progress. Once installers are ready, product management will notify customers of their availability.
Thanks very much to Joseph Morgan, Jacob Rhyne, Mark Bailey, Ryan Lekivetz and Bryan Fricke for presenting at this week’s JMP Dev meeting! The presenters shared background information on the topic of usability as well as recent work on a usability study add-in that we are now using to conduct research on features under development at JMP Discovery and with EA customers. If you missed the meeting, you can find a recording here.
Thanks to Tonya Mauldin for sharing this week’s beta/crash tracks with crashes selected!

JMP Development Updates
Host
- Paul: Python Integration:
- Created 2 new JSL functions. These present a JSL interface to the user to install Python packages or if necessary, create the tailored command line / terminal jpip script in a directory of the user’s choosing.
- Python Install Packages( “package package2 …”);
- Python Create JPIP CMD();
- The JSL functions are supported by a pure Python package jmputils within this is the actual code behind the above functions.
- jmputils.jpip(‘commad’, ‘package package2 …’)
- jmputils.create_jpip(‘dest_dir_path’)
- Removed the previous jpip.bat, and jpip shell script which were located in read-only directories and potentially needed editing by the user.
- Removed the find_jpip.py and the ea_jpip.py scripts as they are no longer necessary. The ea_jpip.py being the basis for jmputils.jpip() function.
- Discovered issue in jmputils code on Windows EA-7, that caused error with Python Create JPIP CMD(). The directory path selected needed the windows \ path separator needed escaping within the path string. Fixed in push today for EA-8
- The jpip wrapper script no longer changes directory to JMP’s Install directory within the execution of the script so it can correctly operate packages and files in the directory jpip is called from. Jpip install --user -r requriements.txt. Instead of needing to give absolute path to requirements.txt file. Is fixed for EA-8
- Daniel: Software Authorization bug fixes for EA7 have been completed, now I’m adding final touches needed for the full 18 go-live!
Interactive HTML
- John Powell: Our team spent a day white box testing and found 44 items (Whitebox Testing Results). Triaged JMP Live and Interactive HTML Jira items. Added support for the hide row state for the Cell Plot platform (JMPHTML-2458). Fixed an issue where the Contour HDR Outlier tooltip showed ‘Nan’ for the Overlay role (JMPHTML-13418). Interviewed a candidate for the Automated Testing position in Josh’s team. Discussed profilers support for Reliability platforms with Mia, Paul, and Jerry Fish (JMPPRODMGMT-898). Discussed differences between labels in Two Way clustering and Cell Plot platform with Dave Barbour (JMP-19822).
- Paul Spychala: Fixing bugs for 18.0: Report with query string fails [JMPHTML-13375]. Categorical Axis with Tick Increment goes static (partial fix) [JMPHTML-1913]. Labels of Cell Plot on Cell Plot platform don't accept back slash [JMPHTML-13371]. Axis Labels for Control Chart Builder do not wrap correctly [JMPHTML-2177].
- Praveena: Currently working on HTML5 throw an exception when resizing an icon and GB: Area: Additional line segment drawn between markers. Created a roadmap proposal for the team to start planning for 18.1 and 19.0.
- Mike Stickles: Completed fix for JMPHTML-13374 (Bars don't honor the fill color setting), awaiting code review. Currently investigating JMPHTML-2446 (Label for Percentage of Total not exact on the bars comparing to that of desktop).
- Michael Senouyuit: Completed JMPHTML-1302: Fixed Tooltip Covers the marker of interest, JMPHTML-13424: Tag lines move off point if annotation size is trimmed too much, and JMPHTML-13423 Text Annotation TagLines are sometimes connecting to the wrong side of the box. Started working on enhancing some of the testing tools for HTML Annotations.
JMP Live
- Aurora: 18.0: Participated in JMP Live retrospective. Helped Michael Goff reproduce a publish bug. Reviewed user help documentation. 18.1: Changed access notifications to apply only for user directly (not access through a group). Viewing and downloading records at the space level (initial investigation). 19.0: Control Chart Warning Triage (initial discussion with Eric). Performance improvements.
- Michael G: Working on Vue 3 upgrade for JMP Live Client.
Statistics
- Laura C-S: Investigated a bug in the path diagram reported by Yusuke and Daisuke and met with Xan to discuss ideas to fix it. Continued working on MIIV-2SLS as a new estimator in SEM (spent some time on the launch menu and some in summarized computations for the Sargan test). Also investigated adding weights in SEM and scripted a proof of concept in JSL.
Stat Documentation
- Michael C: Prepping stat documentation for the build of the EA7 help; reviewed topic-contributed submissions for JSM, as part of my role on the JSM program committee for 2024.
- Hamid: Worked on updating the SEM chapter, particularly on new features and resolving comments/edits related to the mediation analysis. I've updated Perforce with the latest screenshots and corresponding JSL files. Had a meeting with Laura to discuss specific details about documenting mediation in the SEM chapter, ensuring clarity and accuracy in our content.
- Karen: Finished the new CSALT doe chapter and a re-write of the Evaluate Design chapter.
Stat Testing
- Mark: Reviewed usability study results from the JMP Lab in Indian Wells for Short-Run Control Charts and Response Screening with Bryan Fricke. Walked through Usability Study Tool with Jacob for a group who are considering which capabilities might be made available to users. Presented the JMP Lab results with Bryan, Joseph, Ryan, and Jacob. Installed the PyTorch add-in and familiarizing myself with its features and controls in order to design covering arrays for fault testing. Answered questions in JMP Community.
- Jacob: Tested the update to use OpenBLAS 0.3.25 (JMP-19358). Tested shelved builds by Chris Gotwalt and John Schroedl as preliminary testing for JMP-19839. Prepared JMP Dev presentation on Easy DOE usability study results.
- Tonya: Working on beta reporting, bug verification, and documentation review.
Product Management and Product Marketing
- Bryan F: Processed the results from Discovery Summit Americas 2023 for Short Run Control Charts and Response Screening. Subsequently, I reviewed the results with interested parties. I participated in planning a usability study for a JMP AI Assistant. I met with Dan Schikore and Evan to discuss future work to adjust JMP styling outside of the code; I was pleasantly surprised and deeply impressed that Evan was able to demonstrate an early prototype that raised both questions and interesting possibilities. Fortunately, we predefined our objectives so we can stay true to our goals. I met with Mark and Jacob to see a walkthrough of the various capabilities of their usability add-in; I want to commend them again for their important work to make user testing JMP both more straight-forward and rigorous. I participated in interviews of candidates for a new PM position. I also participated in goal conversations for 2024 with an added emphasis and interest on discovering user needs and developing the ability to effectively evaluate viability, desirability, and feasibility of potential solutions.
Technical Support
- Duane: Working with Jacob and Nicole on the JSL script for detecting the BLAS issues, and will be updating the external note when it is ready. I have also verified all resources that have agreed to help out in case of any critical customer issues for all of Support’s areas (product support, store support, RPS support, etc.) It’s hard to believe there’s only one more week before Christmas… Anyway, here are the TS JMP Live reports and the link to the Jira filter showing the tickets reported by TS for the last 14 days.

Case Topics for Engagement queue, last week:
Development Operations
- Jim: Worked on JMP-19817. Migrated Windows silent script unit test installs from non-authorized to authorized installers (thanks Bob and Nick). Adjusted to a mount point change of JMPSRV01 to a local folder for multiple Macintosh unit test machines (thanks Nick). JMP Pro 18 Early Adopter builds and associated mac OS installer. Planning for the Perforce branching for JMP 19.0.
- Melanie: Experimented with different ways to sync from Jenkins directly, using MIF-PDF jobs as pilot. Purpose: ensure latest files are being used. Asked and answered some questions in the help build project, using EA7 as the test bed. Did a little branching planning with Jim’s assistance – since we’re branching to 19.0 before we create 18.1 in January, that changed a few things. Lightly investigated Jira status vs resolution processes in different workflows.
Documentation
- ChrisB: Handed the DJ to Localization. Prepared the latest 18.0 help build to publish Monday. Got Michael's updates to 17.x into the HTML (JMPDOC-2064). Corrected the noindex tagging for several versions of help. Tested a couple of the scripts moved to AWS.
- Devon: Integrating review notes for the Python documentation; writing documentation for Compact Character Columns, Group Platforms, and Columns Manager
System/Host Testing-Cary
- Mandy: Worked on a few Jira tests for fixed crashes. Met with developer to discuss possible changes to the data table in JMP 19 to improve users’ experiences editing, formatting and summarizing and filed JIRA issues. Installed Beyond Trust – and started finding and reporting issues – one of which was with JMPRUNNER, a fix went in, and Service ticket filed. Verified the EA7 installer on Mac. Testing a final workflow fix with file packaging.
- Hunter: JMP 18 EA 7 testing, meeting with Daniel and Audrey to discuss authorization features and testing, JIRA verifications, and responded to one JMP 17 EA 6 track.
- Audrey: EA7 testing has taken up most of my week, followed closely by reviewing approval requests. My team did a holiday lunch, and here’s the “do something crazy” picture from that event.
Web Testing – Cary
- Josh L: Mostly documentation review and JMP Live Server and Registration testing. Answering some deployment questions and tweaking JMP Live 18.1 and 19.0 nightly updates.
System/Host Testing-Beijing
Data Discovery
- Dan S: Fixed a hang that was introduced in 18 when supporting hover labels on by-subset reports. Triaging other issues, planning for 19, and reviewing changes.
- Morgan: Working on writing tests for JMP Notebook, updating Scintilla, and brainstorming R integration within Notebooks.
DOE
- Caleb: Started on some small development work for JMP 19. I also learned that the paper Ryan and I worked on with Sky was accepted!
Note from Shannon
