Welcome to the JMP Development Update for December 8, 2023!
We have now reached our JMP 18 EA7 freeze milestone. We expect to create another EA after the holiday break. QA teams plan to vet the EA7 installers early next week in preparation for releasing them to customers. We’re looking forward to continued feedback on late-developing features as well as the new authorization licensing mechanism!
We will be branching for JMP 19 in a few short weeks, and after the holidays we’ll wrap up 18 and branch 18.1 for maintenance fixes. We will also create an 18.0.1 security fix branch to address important vulnerabilities that can’t wait for 18.1. Thanks to all who have been triaging Jira issues and updating Planned Version values to remove 18.0 for items that are not going to be fixed in Approval Mode.
Documentation manager Qiana Eaglin asked me to include a reminder that in JMP 18.0, the following sample data tables have been removed: Boston Housing.jmp, Crime.jmp, CrimeData.jmp, and Reactor Augment Design.jmp. Also, the DotPlot sample script has been removed. For more information about these changes, please see this InsideJMP article.
FYI if you are using JMP 18 on Apple Sonoma 14.1, you may encounter a bug with the Recent Files list that causes entries to disappear when switching between JMP versions (JMP-19269). This seems to be related to recent Apple security changes. Chris Humphrey has submitted details to Apple and is waiting to hear back. Audrey notes that someone consistently using the same version of JMP will not see a problem - Recent files are retained normally. However, if you regularly switch between more than one JMP version, Recent Files will be lost. This includes switching between:
- JMP 18 daily builds and JMP 18 debug
- JMP 18 and JMP 17
- JMP 17 and JMP 16.
Thanks very much to developer Morgan Gribbins for presenting her JMP Notebook proof of concept work at yesterday’s JMP Dev meeting! Morgan has been working on this JMP 19 project in a separate feature branch and has made a jmprunner test build available for those who want to try it out. The notebook concept has been a popular customer request over the years and this project generated a lot of questions and comments from meeting participants yesterday. If you missed the meeting, you can find a recording here.
Finally, thanks very much to Tonya Mauldin for sharing this week’s beta/crash cases with the crashes selected.

Product Management and Product Marketing
- Bryan F: Worked on creating guidance to supplement the UX Assessment process which includes the User Testing Decision Framework and User Testing Software and Prototypes, updating the UX Roadmap, and processing usability results from the Discovery Usability Lab. We had over 60 people at Discovery sign up for an external user panel. This panel will be useful for developers who wish to proactively obtain feedback on their designs or implementations for JMP 19. I also participated in the PM Summit this week where we had both a retrospective and initial planning for next year. Also, I helped facilitate some meetings with developers from Brian Corcoran’s and Julian’s groups who are planning to work on developing an ability to more easily specify styling preferences such as margins and paddings in report windows.
Technical Support
- Duane: Tech Support has had a very busy week! We participated in the JMP Enablement 2024 Planning Meetings along with the rest of Jeff’s teams. In addition to developing plans for the future of Enablement, we had the honor of hearing insights from Jon Weisz as well as Michael Scruggs. Of course, we still managed our cases! Here are the TS JMP Live reports and the link to the Jira filter showing the tickets reported by TS for the last 14 days.
