FDE for two dimensional data

What inspired this Wish List Request? Customer request and personal observation.

Please describe the new or improved feature or solution you would like to see. Extend FDE to two X (or more) variables. Individuals at Intel sited the paper Principal Component Analysis of Two-Dimensional Functional Data, Zhou, L, and Pan, H, Journal of Computational and Graphical Statistics, September, 2014, pp. 779-801, as a reference

What would the value be to you and/or other users if this new feature is provided? This type of analysis is unavailable in other software and would be beneficial to model 2 dimensional surfaces and 3 dimensional environments.

Is this an external customer request? Yes, Intel. As a personal observation 2 and 3 dimensional FDE could be beneficial to Applied Materials and other semiconductor equipment and integrated circuit manufactures.

Is there a competitive software package that has this feature or solution that we should be aware of? No. There may be packages available in R or Python, but I am unaware of any.

Will this impact a renewal, expansion, or adoption at a customer, and does this put an account at risk if we do not address this? Possibly. Providing this functionality would help further embed JMP Pro at Intel and might provide the impetus for JMP Pro adoption at Applied Materials.

I had multiple conversations at Discovery with customers that would like this ability. They used language like "point clouds" and "surfaces," but the desire was the same: to use FDE on 3 dimensional data.
