Welcome to the JMP Development Update for October 20, 2023!
Authorization-related testing continued this week for JMP 18 EA6. Windows testing has revealed a time zone-related issue when authorizing. It is not clear yet whether that issue can be fully resolved at this time; if not, then this may need to be noted on the EA page as a known limitation of JMP Pro 18 EA6. Next week, host and life sciences developers plan to meet to discuss issues encountered when launching the EA add-in on the Mac and the JMP Clinical add-in on both Mac and Windows. These two issues will likely delay the release of Mac EA6 and Clinical EA6 until they can be resolved.
Thanks to all who participated in another successful JMP Discovery Summit event! If you attended the conference, Mia asks that you please add your notes to this Confluence notes page, along with any associated Jira issues. If you gave a talk at Discovery that you’d like to give at an upcoming Dev meeting, please see the JMP Dev Volunteer Schedule in Confluence. Next week, the doc team will present on changes to the Help menu for JMP 18.
Today we bid a fond farewell to JMP/JMP Live tester Eric(Nai) Wang! He is embarking on a new adventure - moving to New Zealand with his family – and as a result will be leaving Nala’s testing team in Beijing. Eric has been a highly valued member of the JMP testing team for 8 years, most recently heavily involved in testing efforts for our JMP Live product. Who among us hasn’t thought of moving to New Zealand at one time or another – but Eric is one of only two people I’ve ever known to actually make it happen! Best of luck to you and your family, Eric, as you get settled!

JMP Development Updates
DOE
- Peng: Continued research work with Bill on fatigue data modeling. Update the internal parameterization for the Nishijima model based upon the most recent results. Continue polishing the Fatigue Model platform; updated the interactions between the model comparison table and data-model overlay plot, such that selection is synchronized, to facilitate model comparisons.
- Caleb: Returned from Discovery yesterday. Had a great time and lots of good feedback. There was a lot of interest in the sample size explorers. There was also a lot of interest in my talk on autonomous vehicles. John Sall encouraged me to give it as a dev talk as well.
Host
- Daniel Powell: Testing a fix for the JMP Clinical EA Add-in issue, and hope it resolves everything! (JMP-18938)
- Paul N:
- Fixed notarization issues with Mac EA6 build. The Python Foundation’s Director was invited to give a talk in EBC to SAS’s Python Guild. I got invited as well and it may have been former JMP DevOps developer Chris Swift that sent the invitation my way. The presentation was interesting and focused a lot on how the Python Foundation works and its support role to the Python community.
- Python Integration
- Testing different R-serve connection sources with the Python / R sample script.
- Added initial telemetry support to the Python Integration.
- Addition of a Python directory to the Sample Scripts folder, along with the Rserve script and a couple other key scripts.
- Checked to ensure a Python script’s sys.exit() is caught and does not exit JMP.
- Revisiting Matplotlib issue. Discovered it’s only the MACOSX backend that exits/crashes when run interactively. Submitted bug report #27147 to Matplotlib on the issue.
- Created a standalone Cocoa application that embeds Python and runs Python code to launch matplotlib that demonstrates the issue with MacOSX backend and expected functionality with the ‘PyAgg’ backend.
- Discovered by installing PyQt6 package for the PyAgg backend, that I could write Qt GUI code creating windows and buttons able to be run from JMP’s Python.
- Initial progress in implementing Python slice operation for jmp.DataTable.Column. Supporting constructs like col[1:7:2] => start at index 1, stop at index 7 and return every other value (step by 2).
Interactive HTML
- Mike Stickles: Fixed bugs JMPHTML-1188, JMPHTML-1626, JMPHTML-1815, and JMPHTML-2003. Found while reviewing old issues that JMPHTML-591 and JMPHTML-577 had apparently been fixed by other work and submitted them for testing (591 has been closed). Also found fix for JMPHTML-1815 but have some final work to do before submitting it for review. Will be out next week all day Monday and Tuesday as well as Wednesday morning.
- John Powell: Resolved issues with changing graph scales or size after interacting with local data filters on JMP Live (JMPHTML-2241, JMPHTML-2297, JMPHTML-2301, JMPHTML-2335, JMPHTML-2343, JMPHTML-2409). With help from the Interactive HTML team, published examples of new and improved Interactive HTML features to JMP Live for Discovery conference. Created a job description for a summer intern for the Interactive HTML team.
- Paul Spychala: Bug Fixes: Gen Reg ZI Binomial returning incorrect values (JMPHTML-2398). Text labels in Interaction Profiler are positioned incorrectly (JMPHTML-655). Profiler XTerm formatting is inconsistent (JMPHTML-1068). GStream drawing extra lines with incorrect colors (JMPHTML-654).
- Praveena: Completed work on CP: Violin: Tooltips for one violin in chart shows color column: color column instead of X, Y values (Reached out to Lisa Grossman regarding tooltips/overlay encoding in Violin Plots, Thanks Lisa!!), Handle cases with reports containing multiple distribution, e.g Dashboards, and Console Errors in a Distribution Analysis. Started working on CS: LDF: Filter condition no longer honored when change columns.
- Michael Senoyuit: Finished JMPHTML-2263 and started working on JMPHTML-1898 - Matched Pairs Dif by Mean plot labels not shown.
JMP Live
- Aurora: Bug fixing (getting down to the less urgent bugs now). Intermittent test failure fixing. Loosen restriction on avatar size and downsize before storing on server (but will apply this change to 19.0).
- Adrianna: Working on bug fixes and investigating how the authorization changes will impact JMP Live.
Statistics
- John Sall: In Response Screening, Russ Wolfinger experienced slowness in the logistic regression. The example with 16 binary Y’s and 6178 continuous X’s on 15,558 rows fitted the 98,848 logistic regressions in 12.2 minutes on my Mac laptop. The code was rewritten to combine the duplicate X values across rows and now it takes only 2.8 seconds to obtain the same result – a 259x improvement! (JMP-18883)
- Laura C-S: Fixed a few bugs in SEM related to multiple group analysis, the path diagram, and JSL. Had a number of exchanges trying to figure out how to provide JMP Pro trials to attendees at the upcoming workshop at U. Iberoamericana. Translating all presentation materials to Spanish, which is teaching a me a lot of technical jargon I’ve never used before! Reviewed draft claims and figures for UX Tool patent.
Stat Documentation
- Michael C: Attended Discovery Summit Americas: presented a poster that introduced people to types of censored data and how to specify them in JMP, attended some sessions, and talked with customers in the meet the experts area. There were a number of people who came by my poster who had censored data and did not know about how to specify it (either with censoring columns or the detection limits column property). In the Stat and Modeling meet the experts area, there were quite a few functional data questions, but I also heard questions about validation, model screening, generalized regression, and the simulator in profiler. Throughout the conference, I heard from a number of customers that they are happy with JMP’s documentation!
- Hamid: Focused on the SEM mediation analysis documentation, addressing comments and also dedicating time to documenting several new SEM features.
Stat Testing
- Mark: Attended JMP Discovery Summit in Indian Wells, CA. Presented lightning talk about usability testing and unit testing with covering arrays for Easy DOE. Presented poster about usability studies of the UI for the factor list in Easy DOE that led to JMP 18 changes.
- Jacob: Attended Discovery. Adding tests for OML Designs in the Screening Design platform. Verifying Jira tickets and cleaning unit tests.
Technical Support
- Duane: Bobby and Patrick were able to participate in JMP Discovery Summit Americas this year, and they have shared that it was an energizing conference. Lots of good conversations, collaborations, and fun. Back in the eastern time zone, however, we remained steadfast in supporting customers around the world. Here are the TS JMP Live reports and the link to the Jira filter showing the tickets reported by TS for the last 14 days.

Note from Shannon
Hope you all have a great weekend! And as Jim Borek reminded me this morning – it’s the last weekend to get the latest deep-fried-whatever at the North Carolina State Fair. WRAL published this rundown of the latest new culinary creations for 2023 here – and it’s shrimp, just in case you were wondering!

(You know if I had to choose, I’d probably go with the cheesecake slushie!)
