Following the end of each quarter, the Global Academic Team provides recent highlights that feature new licensing wins, strategic adoptions, and other relevant updates from the previous quarter. Here are highlights from Q3 2023:
Americas
Amidst the backdrop of increasing federal investment in semiconductor manufacturing in the U.S., the University of Texas Cockrell School of Engineering hosted a Semiconductor Day on Sept. 1 at their Austin, TX campus. Kevin Potcner, Peter Polito, Ryan Cooper, and over 800 attendees, including faculty from UT Austin and other area universities and representatives from AMD, Samsung, Apple, NXP, Microsoft, and Texas Instruments. The event centered on presentations and panel discussions about ways the universities can partner in research and curriculum to help build a workforce pipeline for semiconductor manufacturing. Read a summary of the event.
JMP had a table at the event so attendees could learn about JMP and how our software is used in the semiconductor industry. Contacts were made with various engineering faculty and industry professionals.
Louisiana State University
The JMP Academic team recently held a half-day workshop at Louisiana State University, the flagship university of the state of Louisiana. Organized in partnership with JMP champion Prof. Luis Escobar of the Department of Experimental Statistics, the workshop drew faculty and students from a diverse range of fields, from statistics to sociology to biomedical research. Topics included data visualization, linear modeling, machine learning, and reliability. While on campus, Academic Ambassador Ross Metusalem also met with the instructor of LSU’s introductory statistics service course to discuss plans to integrate JMP into the course starting in spring 2024. This course adoption will introduce nearly 2,000 new students to JMP every year.
Montreal Polytechnic
Polytechnique Montreal acquired a campus-wide JMP Academic Suite. Pany Allen reports that it is being adopted in math and industrial engineering departments by Prof. Bernard Clement who will use JMP Pro in his courses, Planning and Analysis of Industrial Experiments, Statistical Process Control, and Applied Statistics. Polytechnique is one of the three largest engineering schools in Canada and the largest one in the province of Quebec. Since its foundation in 1873, this French-language educational establishment trains engineers and specialists.
Other new campus-wide academic suites in Q3 were licensed at Tulane University, The University of Chicago, the University at Buffalo, the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, and the University of West Georgia.
ASIA
In partnership with the Karnataka State Pharmacy Council, JMP successfully concluded a two-day workshop titled ‘Statistical Discovery in Pharmaceutical Sciences using JMP'. This coincided with World Pharmacists' Day on Sept. 25. The workshop was designed to bridge the gap between theory and real-world application, utilizing JMP Statistical Discovery software. The workshop, led by JMP’s Ambassador Muralidhara and Enablement Engineer, Chandramouli, covered a wide range of topics, including Design of Experiments (DOE), Quality by Design (QbD), biostatistics, and data visualization. More than 40 professors from various pharmacy schools across Karnataka actively engaged in hands-on sessions. The workshop received an impressive overall rating of 4.9 out of 5, highlighting the quality and impact of the sessions.

Global Academic Manager Clare Zhang attended the First Joint Conference on Statistics and Data Science that was hosted by Peking University’s, Center for Statistical Science in Beijing. The conference featured more than 100 academic presentations with over 1,500 participants. The emphasis on innovation and collaboration was a recurring theme throughout the conference. Speakers and panelists stressed the importance of pushing the boundaries of statistics and data science, embracing new technologies, and finding novel applications in various industries. The idea of "industry-academia-research" collaboration was strongly encouraged to bridge the gap between theory and practice.
The conference provided ample networking opportunities for making new connections, discussing research ideas, and exploring potential collaborations between JMP and academia.
EMEA
Volker Kraft delivered a two-day workshop for the SynTech Center for Doctoral Training in Chemistry at the University of Cambridge in support of their ongoing evaluation of JMP Pro. The workshop was an eye-opener for more than 40 PhD and master students, with some using DOE in their research. Following the workshop, Volker joined Phil Kay to present and exhibit at the two-day Machine Learning for Chemical and BioTech Engineering, hosted by Prof. Alexei Lapkin. A hands-on workshop on Model Screening and SVEM gave more than 80 participants from academia and industry an opportunity to experience key ML concepts on their own computers.
Atlantic Technological University
ATU is a recently established new technological university in the north-west of Ireland, after merging three institutes of technology (ITs) – Galway-Mayo IT, IT Sligo, and Letterkenny IT – into a single university. Yannick Casamayou-Boucau, Lecturer in the Department of Analytical, Biopharmaceutical Sciences, heard about JMP through previous collaborators who worked at Johnson Matthey, and used JMP himself a bit too when he worked at Abbott. After a few calls and a successful demo, Yannick has quickly become a great sponsor of JMP and convinced the dean and the heads of his department to switch to JMP. The license will be soon made available to its 20,000 students for teaching and research in engineering and life sciences.
MARKETING UPDATE
The updated list of universities with JMP Academic Suite Campus-wide licenses is now available online. The list will be updated once per year, making the page a reliable and easy-to-access reference for all faculty, students and academic researchers who wish to know if their university is covered, and to ask the academic team for more information on how to access the license.
