Hello everyone,
I’ve put together a demo video from a project I did with a customer as a training opportunity for their chemists who develops formulations.
This is a typical example of what is known as a "mixture of mixtures" with a few extra layers of complexity. One of these is the specific constraint due to a fixed stoichiometry for two components corresponding to an equality constraint. Another is the use of two antinomic responses, Y1 which we want to maximize and Y2 which we want to minimize even though they are positively correlated.
The example concerns an epoxy resin formulation, the names and concentration ranges of the components as well as responses having been modified with respect to the initial example.
Overview
Who would find this useful?
- Formulation chemist, development chemist, particularly in the field of resins, paints, etc. where mixtures of mixtures are common.
- Anyone setting up a complex design that does not converge.
- Anyone trying to optimize conflicting responses and looking for multiple solutions.
Business value
- Speed of implementation of a design covering the entire design space while including specific constraints rather than a step-by-step trial-and-error process that is unpredictable in terms of number of runs and success.
- Ease of finding the right solution as opposed to trial and error where you may find the optimal solution for one response but not for the others and you struggle to find the tradeoff.
- This allows selecting few formulations for more in-depth testing on additional critical responses that may take longer or cost more to measure, but are just as critical.
How to use the material
- Save the journal and the JMP files in a folder at your convenience.
- In the journal locate the "Set the Path to folder" script and replace my path (“/C:/Users/fraemr/OneDrive - SAS/Attachments/111 Data/DOE/2 - Mixture Design/Resin/”) by your path to direct to your own folder.
- Once it’s done and when using the journal you have to click on "Set the Path to folder" script first so that the other scripts (which are using the shortcut "Path_to_the_folder_where_files_are_located") will works properly.
