Discovery Summits may be online, but, as John Sall says, “Discovery Summit is still full of great content. We will still interact with each other. And we’ll still have some fun.” That’s the case with all four upcoming Discovery Summits. Each is entirely online, and each is totally free to attend. Here’s the scoop.
Discovery Summit Americas is our flagship Discovery, with more days, more content and more opportunities for interactivity.
It begins on Monday, Oct. 12 with “unsessions” on JSL and Predictive Modeling, and it ends on Friday, Oct. 16 with an interactive chat with NPR social scientist and host of Hidden Brain, Shankar Vedantam. Between those sessions are all the things you’ve come to know and love about Discovery Summits.
How can an online version incorporate those elements? Here’s how:
- Discovery Expo is still the place where users can ask developers anything and listen in as others ask even harder questions.
- Plenary sessions are known for being thought-provoking. Now we’ve built in extra time for audience questions.
- Birds-of-a-feather sessions let like-minded people hang out together over big-picture topics or in-the-weeds stuff.
- Feedback is not only welcomed, it’s encouraged. And the infrastructure will let us do that.
- After-hours events are still the place for making new connections or simply relaxing with old acquaintances.
- Books can be browsed, JMP gear can be gotten, Tech Support can be talked to.

Actually, there are a couple of big changes.
- Attendees don’t have to make a choice about which papers they want to see; and the poster gallery won’t be as crowded this year. We’ve decided to record every paper and poster ahead of the conference -- they are available right now! Viewers can watch in whatever order and in whatever time frame works best for them.
- We’ve also scheduled the papers that we expect to be the most popular (per our Steering Committee) to run as interactive papers during the conference week. This is how viewers can ask questions and comment, and the paper authors can respond in real-time. Posters will run in a similar fashion. We believe this solution gives our attendees the best of both worlds: time to focus and time to interact.
- A silver lining to hosting Discovery Summit Americas online instead of in Cary: Prospects will join this year. And we believe they will do it from across the Americas and from Europe and even Asia. There’s no travel needed, no registration fee, no huge commitment. This is your opportunity to invite prospective JMP users, directors and VPs, people you’ve really wanted to get some time with. Here’s your chance. Invite them to join for some or all of the conference.
What should you do right now?
- Log in and be a great host!
This event was originally scheduled to be held in Shanghai in April, which could not happen due to Covid-19. We postponed it to September, hoping that we would be able to meet in-person. After much consideration, it was decided that our Shanghai event would be entirely online.
With the help of a distinguished Steering Committee, our colleagues in China were able to move the event to September and change the format to all online. As a result, Discovery Summit China was held Sept. 22 – 24, running from 13:00-15:00 China Standard Time each day. Read the full story about the event's success.
Just like every November, a Discovery Summit will be held for hundreds of JMP users in Japan. Unlike usual, however, this event will be completely online and will be free to attendees. The agenda for the mid-November event is currently being planned, and even though the official call for papers is closed, the Steering Committee will still consider paper submissions that are exceptional.
What should you do right now?
- If you have any contacts who have great stories to tell and can do it in Japanese, have them submit their abstracts right away.
- If you have an audience in Japan on your social media, share posts to promote the event.
- Tell your global accounts about the event so that their colleagues in Japan can plan to attend.
- Watch the Discovery Summit Japan website for the agenda and registration.
Introducing Discovery Summit Korea
Our first-ever Discovery Summit Korea will take place December 1-2, 2020. The event is still taking shape, and the website is brand new. However, because in-person Explorer events have been so successful in this region, we have high hopes that an online Discovery will draw several hundreds of users from Korea. A Steering Committee is currently being formed, and content options are being discussed.
What should you do right now?
- If you have any contacts who have great stories to tell and can do it in Korean, have them answer the call for content.
- If you have an audience in South Korea on your social media, plan to share posts to promote the event.
- Tell your global accounts about the event so that their colleagues in South Korea can plan to attend.
- Watch the Discovery Summit Korea website for the agenda, registration and other details as they become available.
Discovery Summit Europe will be in March 2021
It is not too soon to start thinking about Discovery Summit Europe, which will be held online the week of March 8, 2021. Format and functionality will be very similar to Discovery Summit Americas. Call for papers will be opening in the next week or two. Be ready to tell your European customers about it.
