Search and recovery efforts are ongoing. Thousands more have been forced to evacuate the island.
Thousands of acres, including the historic town of Lahaina, have been completely burned to ashes.
Account Executive Eddie Contreras (@Eddie_Contreras) is a former resident of Lahaina. After joining JMP last September, he moved from Maui to California to work on the Bay Area Health and Life Sciences team. But he kept his condominium in Lahaina to ‘someday return to.’ Unfortunately, it was lost to the fires.
“The last few weeks have been challenging, to say the least, but from the perspective of my friends and neighbors in Lahaina and the rest of the island, it has been a terrible calamity,” Contreras said.
Contreras says that all his close friends on the island are, thankfully, accounted for, but their individual situations vary greatly. “Some still have their homes and incomes, and are doing their best to help, including boarding of the less fortunate,” he said. “Many have lost their homes and everything they’ve owned, including family members and pets, and some are still not accounted for. It’s still difficult to get accurate information, and most are experiencing a deep level of frustration.”
Even in the darkest of times for the people of Lahaina, Contreras says he’s seen the true spirit of ‘aloha.’ “I have seen community leaders step up and many of my friends coordinate relief for the community in a very meaningful way,” he said. “‘Aloha’ doesn’t just mean hello, it encompasses the spirit of hospitality, love and acceptance of all friends and neighbors, and is deeply rooted in Hawaiian and Polynesian cultures. There are many factors, and plenty of reflection that will go into the cause of this disaster, but those sentiments can be debated at a later, more appropriate time. Currently, what the folks need there is patience, understanding, and help.”

Contreras has been in contact with friends that are community activists and have already shown heroic levels of support for the people of Lahaina. Disregarding their own lives and safety, many have gone above and beyond to help the local community. “One of those leaders is a lady by the name of Kami Irwin,” Contreras said. “She and her partner Garrett Marrero, the co-founder of Maui Brewing Co., are using their space and the resources available to them to coordinate a tremendous response.”
Contreras was able to speak with Irwin last week, and she shared a few local charities she felt are directly helping the community in Maui. These are 100% locally vetted 501c3 charities (donations to these charities are tax deductible):

“Certainly, there is no obligation to give. But if you have been looking for a way to help, it will be going towards a wonderful community and people that have dedicated their lives to the service of welcoming others to their beautiful island,” Contreras said.
Contreras says, with sad reflection, that most of the time he spent on Maui was on Front Street and in Lahaina Town. “All those memories seem to have burned to the ground and it’s pretty hard to imagine it not being there anymore. The one thing that has not faded was the love and acceptance that I received from so many lovely people that happened to live and work in my small town. The true spirit of ‘aloha.’”
