Welcome to the JMP Development Update for July 28, 2023!
JMP 17.2 installer verification efforts are ongoing. Thanks very much to testers in Cary and Beijing who are vetting all the various flavors of our product installers! JMP 17.2 will be the final release of JMP to go through the SAS release engineering process. Updaters will be made available on support.sas.com in advance of full installers being released by SAS.
We passed our JMP 18 Feature Freeze milestone last Friday. High priority projects that must ship with JMP 18 and are still under active development should be detailed on the JMP 18 Late Features page in Confluence.
You can still update individual JMP 18 feature pages in Confluence to describe key updates made since EA4. In about two weeks, we will cut JMP 18 EA5 and these feature pages will help us send customers in the right direction to test new items.
I appreciate the triage work on epic and story items in Jira this week! Please take one of the following steps to deal with remaining items marked with Planned Version = 18.0:
- Mark items still in progress with Developing status and add a section to the Late Features page using the template table.
- If an item is not a remaining 18.0 priority but is a definite priority for 19.0, replace 18.0 with 19.0 in Planned Version.
- If an item is not currently a clear priority for any release, but should be done at some point, please demote it to a feature request and remove any values from the Planned Version field. (When a feature request is prioritized and converted to a story, the Planned Version can be assigned at that time.)
- If an item is unlikely to be a priority at any point, please set it to Test-Ready with a comment to resolve it with a Won’t Fix status.
Thanks for all the work on JMP portable UI strings this week in preparation for our first JMP 18 string handoff! Special appreciation to Melanie, Krzysztof and Trish for spearheading daily test runs that helped us better track progress as developers and writers updated strings this week.
Thanks very much to our summer interns who presented at the dev meetings this week, and to everyone who joined to support them! We had round 1 on Tuesday and round 2 on Thursday. If you couldn’t join live, don’t worry – you can watch the recordings at the links above. We very much appreciate all the work our interns have devoted to a range of projects spanning many JMP departments. You can find a list of all the summer intern presentation topics here in Confluence. If you’re in Cary next Wednesday or Thursday, you can stop by to see Intern Expo presentations in the Education Center (see schedule linked here on Inside SAS).
Thanks very much to Tonya Mauldin for sharing this week’s Beta/Crash tracks with crashes selected!

Beta/Crash tracks for the week of 7/28/23 | JMP Live (sas.com)
And last but not least, thanks very much to Audrey Shull for sharing this Jira Tip of the Week!
Don’t forget – most of our development projects are now set up to automatically assign the Tester as the Assignee when you change the status to Test-Ready. It’s one less field to change!

JMP Development Updates
Interns
- Hamid: Finalizing edits and revisions made in the Profiler, Model Comparison, and Profiler chapters. Boston Housing has been deleted from these chapters and now they include new data tables. Attended informative daily “A Tour of the JMP Codebase” meetings and the first 2 rounds of intern talks. I am amazed by the talent and knowledge of other interns. Presented at SAS Visual Analytics User Guide’s 2023 Meeting: Highlights from the 2023 Intern Data Story Challenge as one of the teams invited to present their work for a larger audience at SAS. Final touches before adding “Secondary Students” data table to the JMP data library. This new data table is now available in the Sample Data folder. I am still in communication with the dataset creator to get more description about some variables and enable our users make a better sense of the context. Working on Mediation Example and JMP presentation for next week.
- Sohail Lokwandhala: Debugged, trained, and finetuned Japanese and French OpenNMT custom models using JMP training data combined with external datasets. Also worked on my JMP presentation for next week.
- Trevor Rathje: Completed my portion of the trial leads project that I worked with Andy Zhou on! I also presented my portion of my final project with my fellow interns.
- Michael Lee: This week me and a few other JMP interns wrapped up and presented our project. I also finalized work on a whitespace project I’m working on for some of JMP’s accounts and sent some cold call emails to some lost JMP opportunities.

- Peng: This is string work week for me. Starting with nearly 700 strings at the beginning of the week, down to 20 now.
Host
- Paul Nelson: Lots of work finishing up Python support before last Friday’s feature freeze, this week making sure my strings are extracted and working on documenting Python features in the ‘import jmp’ package. In addition to bug fixing some of the behavior and updating functions in the package to be consistent with Python naming conventions.

Further discussion and investigation of encoding limitations importing Chinese-encoded SAS datasets. Working on changes to telemetry opt-in prompt based on Legal guidance. Icon work. Statistics
- Laura C-S: Created new scripts for a very interesting data table that Hamid got and prepared for JMP’s sample data folder (Secondary Students.jmp). Explored the new Sparce PCA algorithms that Clay wrote and John added to the PCA platform. Fixed remaining issues with distinguishing residual edges in SEM. Added an option in SEM to fit and compare cross-lagged panel models. Continued working on bootstrap for SEM.

Adding a few Jiras for Action recorder that came in as workflow recording issues – hoping some of those can be addressed in 18.0 so they will record in the Workflow later in 18. Chased down a New table issue, due to GZcompression test kicking it out as having a different script, but narrowed it down now to just saving the table on Mac (Reactor Augment Data.jmp) that Ernest will debug so we can determine what to do.
