Welcome to the JMP Development Update for July 21, 2023!
We have now reached our Feature Freeze milestone for JMP 18.0! Thanks for continuing to triage Story and Epic items that currently have 18.0 in the Planned Version field. There are hundreds of items in JMP Jira with Planned Version = 18.0 that are currently sitting in Initiated status indicating no work has yet been done. Feature Freeze is a great time to review and prioritize these feature Jira issues for future versions. As you work through the list, there’s an added bonus that you may find items you can resolve that are dups or have been fixed by some other change.
Please take one of the following steps as you triage remaining 18 feature items:
- Mark items still in progress with Developing status and add a section to the Late Features page using the template table. Ideally, once we get past feature freeze, only items that are on the late features page should still be marked with Planned version = 18.0, and all these items should be marked Developing.
- If an item is not a remaining 18.0 priority but is a definite priority for 19.0, replace 18.0 with 19.0 in Planned Version.
- If an item is not currently a clear priority for any release, but should be done at some point, please demote it to a feature request and remove any values from the Planned Version field. (In general, FRs should not have planned versions assigned. When a feature request is converted to a story, the Planned Version can be assigned at that time.)
- If an item is unlikely to be a priority at any point, please set it to Test-Ready with a comment to resolve it as Won’t Fix.
JMP 18 EA5 is planned to freeze on 8/11/23. Please keep your feature pages up to date so that product management can share those updates with customers. Customers appreciate details about features but also significant bug fixes that address items found in previous EA iterations.
Meanwhile, we are getting very close to the end of the JMP 17.2 cycle. JMP 17.2 installer candidates are planned to be created on Monday. QA will kick of the process of validating them next week and we hope to sign off within a few weeks. Updaters will be made available on support.sas.com. Full installers will be available for customers to request from SAS around 9/19/23. New customers purchasing through our JMP first systems will have access to JMP 17.2 in My JMP, and existing customers will have access to 17.2 via My JMP once it is ready for legacy accounts.
Thanks very much to John Sall for offering to present on JMP 18 updates for report ordering at this week’s dev meeting! John shared technical details with developers and emphasized the importance of report ordering especially to JMP Live customers. JMP tester Hui Di also presented two add-ins that make it easy to publish JMP content to HTML5 and JMP Live. These add-ins are available for testers and developers to quickly evaluate their reports in JMP Live (HTML, JMP Live). If you missed the meeting, you can find a recording here. (A page with past recordings can be found here in Confluence)
Thanks very much to Tonya Mauldin for providing this week’s beta/crash graph with crashes selected!

Also joined a Teams conference with Japan colleagues with a potential JMP Clinical customer who attended my presentation for JMP Clinical new version kickoff in Japan last April through Zoom.
Technical Support
- Duane: You will notice an uptick in the telephone calls we are seeing the last couple weeks. I am sure this is due to our acceptance of the Sales and Store calls now. Very exciting stuff! In any event, here are the TS JMP Live reports and the link to the Jira filter showing the tickets reported by TS for the last 14 days.
Development Operations
- Myron: Worked on JiraBot updates (JMPTOOL-900), sample data processing using Jenkins (JMPTOOL-505), Help key updates (JMPDOC-1996), and telemetry improvements to remove personally identifiable information from the database and add a JMPEmployee field to the telemetry data dump (JMPTOOL-877, JMPTOOL-888).
- Jim: Helping Nick Ruva with new mac mini setup in the JMP Lab. Jira verification. Migrating more daily UT VMs to AWS AMIs.
Documentation
- Chris B: Created the Korean, Japanese, and Chinese Doc Library PDFs, and corrected the instructions for creating those after Trish had to fix them. Posted the latest Documentation Add-ins for Korean and Chinese. Looking at how the HelpMap works and how the Jenkins job that creates it works (that Myron fixed by glancing at it). Reviewed our intern Emily's videos and presentation and gave her feedback. Worked on an actual doc update, JMP-17515.
- Devon: Continued drafting the Platform Templates chapter of the Using JMP book. Continued STIPS training.
System/Host Testing-Cary
- Mike M: Lots of Jira verifications for 17.2 and 18.0. Help testing took a significant amount of my time this week, testing the translated docs for JA, ZH and KO. Ensured that Sikuli tests that exercised help key maps were working properly for 17.2 now that our help map is ‘published’. Verified that recently published JMP Live help (admin and regular) for all languages is working. I think we still have a jmp.com redirect away from the zh-cn to /en/, so I need to dig into that. Trying to keep up with Columns Manager testing. Still needing to write some JSL tests to exercise the new JSL messages Ernest added.
- Mandy: Worked this week on Compact column change, and added test where needed. Tested workflows prompting features for 18. Came across a JMP live crash today and entered WEBJMP-7300. Starting to figure out workflow pieces to put into my Discovery talk/poster and gather information from some SE’s about what they are seeing and hearing.
- Nick H: Working on unit tests for Templates examples, preparing them to go in the framework for nightly runs. During this work I have discovered a number of bugs, some of which have been already fixed. Working on integrating the timeout failure category into the Testing Dashboard, following Myron’s most recent work in getting the new failure category properly added to the database.
- Anna: Verifying and testing axis label wrapping and thinning issues for HTML5. Testing new Contour Levels dialog. Verifying font issues for Legend. Verifying dendrogram fixes for Hierarchical Custer. Reported TS issues.
System/Host Testing-Beijing
- Beijing Team:
- Eric(Nai) Wang: (1) “folder level permissions” testing. Add more jest tests for GraphQL interfaces, WEBJMP-7033, WEBJMP-7034. Test new permission type “Contributor”. Working a database migration testing (WEBJMP-7027) Discussing bugs with developers (WEBJMP-7243, WEBJMP-7242) (2) Working on JMP 17.2 Regression testing: All automation tests pass. Manage JMP Live connection tests pass (manual). (3) Regular I18N regression test. (4) Bug verification.

(JMP-17592: JMP Crash when doing hierarchy Triple-S import on Windows). (3) DONE JMP Live 18.0 I18N testing round 2/6, 4 bugs created. (4) DONE: Feature testing, total 5 bugs created (WEBJMP-6892: Use Labeled Side Rail Item site-wide). (5) IN-Progress: Feature testing (WEBJMP-2813] Support static reports in downloaded JMP Projects). (6) JMP Clinical 17.1/17.2 Retrospective. (7) Bug verification.
Data Discovery
- Dan S: Platform Templates - error handling on JSL messages, support for JSL to get/apply on distribution vars, fixes for drag-and-drop, more triage on platforms with multiple sub-objects. Column switcher fix for transform columns in Contour Plot. Update to Contour Plot launcher to use the Contour Levels dialog to specify levels prior to launch.
- Morgan: Working on making Formula Depot refreshing work, as well as on improving code folding in the Script Editor. I also pushed some changes allowing statistical platforms to publish their notes to the Formula Depot, so if you could help me get the word out about that, that would be great!
- Julian: Tour of JMP Codebase with Xan is underway; find recordings here. Platform Templates testing and planning. Initial meetings with Host and Product Management groups on JMP 19 focus areas.
- Dave W: Tables with compact columns will now display a warning table when opened in JMP 17 and earlier, rather than showing a corrupt data error.
- Xan: Code tours! And Graph Builder Page layout work.
DOE
- Peng: Compiled my feature development and major improvements to feature category Quality and Reliability. Some items are outside of my regular responsibilities but stay in that category for now to summarize my work. Working with Caleb on CSALT. Fixings of newly surfaced issues in DOE and Reliability. Maintenance work on X11; new static analyzer is starting to pick up SAS C codes’ taste. Working on a degradation modeling question from customer. Worked on a step-stress question from an internal user and miscellaneous research work with Bill.
- Caleb: Finished scripting support for the new CSALT platform just in time for feature freeze. Working on multiple paper revisions, with one or two being resubmitted today (hopefully!). And on the topic of papers, I was informed on Tuesday that a paper I published in the Journal of Quality Technology won the 2023 Lloyd S. Nelson Award for the paper with the “greatest potential for impact”!!
- Brad: Working with Caleb King to revamp our article on a replacement for Lenth’s method. We will re-submit to Technometrics.
Host
- Michael H: Finished rewriting the Load DLL() JSL command to not use the TK library. Updated the summarize-testbot-log script to handle new Address Sanitizer issues being reported. Fixed the three new ASAN issues that were reported on the recent run. Working on writing a test program to Apple to demonstrate the upside-down outline titles in macOS Sonoma.
- John Schroedl: Static analysis warnings were stuck after the latest compiler update. Addressed those and new warnings from updated libxml2. The libxml2 update revealed an issue in Triple-S import use of the library, which I fixed. Removed the Windows custom implementation of JThread and related classes and instead use the code based on std::thread. Finally diagnosed and fixed the MATLAB startup issue in JMP-14840.
