Entering JMP:
Upon arriving at SAS, the interns describe their feelings as “excited”, “nervous”, and “overwhelmed”. As we became accustomed to JMP and its culture, we found ourselves diving headfirst into our work. Now that the halfway point of the internship has been reached, interns now describe themselves as feeling “comfortable,” “confident,” and “empowered.” “JMP really prioritizes learning; they don't expect you to know everything. They want you to be adaptable and they want you to be willing to learn.” Michael Lee, Inside Sales Intern says.
Although new people entering the workforce is not new, the experience of having such influential schooling years pushed online due to the pandemic gives this group of young adults a unique perspective to bring to jobs.
Students struggled with the real possibility of their future goals disappearing completely. The hands-on formative nature of school was thrown into disarray, and so were we. Using the stories of my fellow interns, this article highlights JMP’s role in helping us find success as young people in the emerging workforce. Thank you to the interns who took time to share their experiences by letting me interview them for this story.
If I had told my past self that I would change majors halfway through college, I don’t know if I would have been shocked or relieved. Granted, four years ago, I didn’t know how grueling calculus was going to be. The path that led me to JMP is one that I do not regret. Switching from a Statistics major to Communication, I never thought it would be possible to find a balance of both that I would be comfortable with until I got to JMP.

The best interviews you’ll ever find:
Whether someone knew about SAS prior to applying, applied here among two hundred other jobs, or used a networking platform, we all have found a place at JMP. Many of the interns’ interest in JMP was solidified in incredible interviews. Analytical Education Intern, Brad Norris told me, “The interview was very much oriented around figuring out who you are as an individual, not as a worker.” During his interview, he felt like he already had a connection with his team.
What seemed to surprise people was the fact that we were interviewed by a panel that included our hiring manager and others we would be working with. Many interns expressed their gratitude for employees taking time out of their workdays to interview us. Putting faces to the various teams we would work with made the transition into a new job with hundreds of people much more comfortable. Maddi Walsleben came away from her interview with this feeling from her team: “This internship is about you; we want you to learn, and if you take the experiences that you are creating and learn something from them, then we think it [the experience] is successful.” She said it was the best interview she has ever had.
We were asked questions about what we could bring to JMP and how they could accommodate us to do the best work possible. I remember being able to tell my interview panel how much I was enjoying stage managing for the first time. “I felt like I belonged when I was talking to my interview panel,” Kyra Dalbo, Administrative Intern, says. Once we arrived, a consensus that the meaningful work we were given was truly tailored to our skillsets was reached.

The diverse capabilities of the interns:
We, as interns, have felt nothing but excitement, respect, and gratitude from our coworkers upon arriving at JMP. The environment that has been fostered at this company is one of community, teamwork, and support. With majors ranging from Aerospace Engineering, English, Biomedical and Business, each project taken on by an intern is unique and impactful. All the interns I spoke with explained how valued they felt through the specific projects they were given. “Even for a company that’s as small as JMP, it has so many parts. Getting to learn how you fit in [to the parts] is really gratifying.” JR Cobb, a Science and Technology Writer Intern said.
The interests and passions of the interns can be seen in the work we do at JMP. Since starting at JMP and learning about design of experiments, Will Corley, a Life Sciences Intern, has found himself combining his passion for grilling with DOE in trying to cook the perfect steak. As a Field Marketing Intern, Maddi has always been interested in keeping up with marketing trends, which perfectly coincides with her work at JMP. Swimming is something that came up a few times as I was interviewing interns. Kyra finds that it helps her manage her time and schedules in and outside of work. Emily Cohen, a Technical Writer Intern noted her enjoyment of crochet prepared her for the sometimes slow and tedious work involved at a statistics company. Whether it’s progressive overload with weightlifting, creative writing, or playing video games, interns’ hobbies manifest in the unique skills they bring to work.
As an intern on the less technical end of things, hearing about all the SAS and JMP interns in research and development made me question my value as a team member. Other interns described feeling “out of place” at a tech company surrounded by Computer Science majors. JMP makes a point to value all their interns’ work, whether they are in a technical position or not.
Coming to JMP and meeting other interns that fit a similar niche to myself reassured my value and made me even more excited to contribute to the company. Every intern I interviewed spoke enthusiastically about how happy they were to be doing important work that was practically hand-crafted for their skillset. At JMP, there is certainly a place for everyone. As a technically focused individual, Brad says “They won’t necessarily bring you into a team where everyone is the exact same as you. And that’s partly to help you find where you want to be, and to help you grow professionally as well.”
JMP culture:
Many of the interns picked up on the emphasis JMP places on work life balance. In their definitions of success, “work life balance” was brought up multiple times. It was also brought up when describing JMP as a company. Meetings are not only productive, but personal. I have found it especially gratifying being able to learn about who my coworkers are as people, not just as their position at work. Never have I seen a company care so deeply about its workers. “I continue to be excited to come into work every day,” says Will. He is enthusiastic about not only being able to keep up with his coworkers, but also contributing to JMP.
JMP culture extends far beyond separating and simultaneously blending your professional and personal life. In emphasizing the values of the individual, JMP can find roles for its employees that they can enjoy and be passionate about. “My position allows me to combine the two things that I’m really passionate about,” says JR, a Chemistry major who is working on technical writing. “There is a culture at JMP that everybody has something different and something unique that they can bring to the table.”
Even for the remote interns, the effect of JMP’s culture is something they value and celebrate. “It's like the teams together work so intertwined… It feels more like a community than like a departmentalized job.” Hailee Austin, Event Planner Intern, told me. Interns were surprised by the care and attention put into their remote workers, making them feel included every step of the way. Interns are finding it easy to connect with JMP, inside or outside of the office.
The noticeable rate of interns becoming full time was a surprise to some; the success JMP finds in their interns continues into their professional life. “They have interns doing really important things and then from that they want to keep them doing important things and so they want them to stay at SAS.” Maddi says. “There is a lot of togetherness here.” Kyra told me. “JMP is such a warm place, and it makes me excited to want to work every day and be in the office.”

While gathering intern experiences, many people told me stories about how JMP employees went out of their way to make them feel welcome. To name a few:
- Many of the managers who are remote traveled to Cary during Internpalooza to meet their interns and introduce them to JMP.
- As I was sitting by myself in the café, waiting for someone, Diana Levey asked if I was eating alone and invited me to sit with her.
- JMP employees will go to the cubicles and introduce themselves to interns, eager to learn about who we are and what our projects are; everyone wants to get to know the interns.
- Ryan Gilmore set up multiple meetings with other interns and I to meet the different teams at JMP and learn about what they do.
- One intern didn’t have a security badge for the first two weeks. Jeff Perkinson went out of his way to make sure the intern got into the building every day.
- Andretti Brown got me mac and cheese after I lamented that I couldn’t make it to lunch one day.
- Being interviewed by the people on our prospective teams, and not a typical hiring manager.
Interns are finding their success at JMP in countless different ways. Some find success in constantly being pushed and challenged, others find it in contributing to helping people through data, and others find success through simply putting their best effort forward. No matter how they define what makes them who they are as successful people doing real work, JMP is helping us all become better.
