You may have recently seen the announcement on JMP’s LinkedIn and Twitter social media channels about Benchling’s newest capability – integration with JMP!
If you’re not familiar, Benchling is a cloud-based product for data warehousing, lab notebooks, and other lab informatics purposes used by research scientists in the biotech industry.
Benchling is experiencing tremendous growth, having more than 1,000 Life Sciences customers, with many of those customers using JMP. These customers wanted integration with JMP and Benchling – bringing their data into JMP and pushing it back into their Benchling workflow – so Benchling started creating a solution.
The Benchling development team acquired JMP licenses and began to learn how to do JMP Scripting to build out an integration. “By the time we had our first meeting between their Product Management and Development team and our Product Management team, they already had a good working prototype,” Senior Product Manager Sam Gardner. “We agreed to have follow-up meetings, coordinated by the NW sales team [including Principal Systems Engineer Scott Wise, Senior Account Executive Bonnie Rigo, and Principal Inside Sales Account Representative Rene Kleinhans] to dive deeper into their add-in and also to hear their thoughts on JMP.”
Much of the work included the use of more recent features in JMP that enable the use of REST APIs to connect with other systems. “What was amazing was that they were able to figure almost everything they needed about JMP and JSL without direct involvement from anyone at JMP, all in about six months,” Gardner said. “Their approach is one of the best models we have seen for doing this kind of integration work.”
“By using the tools in JMP for customization, scripting with JSL, and mass customization, Benchling built an integration that is a win for scientists and for research and development overall,” Product Management Director Dan Valente said. “Having a seamless connection between these two systems makes science flow faster and more efficiently. Scientists that rely on both Benchling and JMP every day to manage their R&D can now make their work that much more easy, convenient, and integrated.”
How can you promote this?
Benchling is focused on Life Sciences, and nearly every Benchling customer would be a good JMP candidate. “Almost every Benchling customer can use JMP and that’s a real win for us,” Scott Wise said. “If they’ve added this capability, it reduces a barrier for customers. For JMP prospects that use Benchling, we should absolutely make them aware of this new capability!”
Customers have data systems and data processes that are easier to automate in Benchling, and they can create their analysis data sets in Benchling with traceability to the original source data. “The integration makes it easier to get that data into JMP in a secure way, do analysis on the data however you want in JMP, and then capture the results of that analysis and send it back to Benchling,” Wise said. “So if a customer asks, ‘Do you integrate with “Electronic Lab Notebooks” or “Lab Automation”?’, you can say, ‘Yes, through Benchling, using their integration tools.’”
