Meet the Interns: Parker Dingman
Manager: Eric Hill (@Eric_Hill)
Parker Dingman is a rising senior at Duke University double-majoring in Computer Science and Statistics. He lives in Cary and is working at JMP as a Software Development Intern.
This summer, Parker is working on creating demo-worthy JSL scripts that show how a user can utilize the new data refresh capabilities in JMP Live, with the hope to provide these scripts to JMP Sales staff to help them understand how best to show this powerful feature to potential customers.
Research and Development Senior Director Brian Corcoran (@briancorcoran) says he thinks it's an important contribution to the computer science profession to introduce students to real-world development. "I’m looking forward to seeing how Parker learns JMP and JMP Live and can demonstrate his new knowledge at his intern presentation," he said. "I feel it is important to bring fresh talent into JMP. This helps us understand where we may have areas of improvement. It also helps introduce potential new developers to our product and culture in the hope that they’ll consider joining JMP."
In his free time, Parker likes to climb at Triangle Rock Club. He started climbing one year ago and loves exploring nature with the Duke Climbing Team. Parker also helps teach programming for The Fuqua School of Business and travels to basketball games as a drummer for the Duke Band.
Let’s learn a little more about him.
What made you want to intern at JMP?
I’ve always really liked graphs. There is just something very satisfying about communicating math with pictures. Software at JMP was the perfect opportunity to combine my interest in computer science and statistics. I also like how JMP has fewer employees than other tech companies- I can really feel where every team fits in within the organization.
As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A vet! I still love animals and have a cat named Brix.
What's something most people don't know about you?
I have 27 cousins. Just 2 on my dad’s side, but 25 on my mom’s side…
Of the places you've visited, what's your favorite?
I studied abroad in Bologna, Italy last summer. I got to study Italian at the University of Bologna, which is the world’s oldest university still in operation.
What are you most excited about this internship?
I am excited to set up my own home desk and office desk. I am a big believer in making a personal workspace for creativity.
What do you hope to accomplish during this internship?
Writing some code to make some cool graphs!
If you could splurge on one item and cost was no object, what would you buy?
World's Most Expensive Steak (?)
What would be the title of your autobiography?
Story of An Author Who Can't Write
What advice would you give prospective intern applicants?
Let many people read your resume for a review! It’s a big challenge to communicate that much information on a page. During the interview, focus on why both you and your experiences are a good match for the role.
