A data probe would be a way to drop an annotation or marker at a point on a contour plot (or maybe any graph) and JMP would display the interpolated data (z value and/or other column data) at that point. There could be an option to always display the data value(s) (like a marker label) or only display the value when hovering over the point - like a hover label that could be pinned.

An alternative (or additional) implementation would be an enhancement to the cross hair tool that would display interpolated data in addition to the x and y coordinates.
This idea was inspired by the following discussion on the JMP User Community:
https://community.jmp.com/t5/Discussions/Finding-values-on-contour-plot/m-p/638494/emcs_t/S2h8ZW1haWx8ZGlnZXN0X25vdGlmaWNhdGlvbnxMSUhFNUVCWlM3UERVN3wtMXxPVEhFUlN8aEs#M83635
Note that users can already display data points in Contour Plots and hover to get their data, but the data probe would allow the user to discover the interpolated value between data points. For example, what would the interpolated z value be at the green point below? The color legend only tells us that it's somewhere between 0 and 2.
