What is STIPS?
In virtually every field, gaining insights from data is critical to problem solving, innovation, and growth. But if you don't know what approach to take and how to interpret and communicate the results, you won't be able to take advantage of the best opportunities.

That is why JMP has created the Statistical Thinking for Industrial Problem Solving (STIPS) course. This online statistics course is available, free of charge, to anyone interested in gaining practical skills in using data to find the best way to solve problems.
The case studies used in the STIPS examples and exercises are presented in the book Six Sigma – Making Data Analysis Lean.
STIPS, which was originally developed in English, was available in some other languages such as Chinese, Korean and Japanese with subtitles. Now, we are proud to offer STIPS in Spanish not only with a subtitle option, but also with Spanish narration for curious minds and Spanish-speaking JMP users.
Why STIPS?
At JMP, our goal with STIPS is to increase statistical knowledge in the engineering and science community worldwide.
STIPS was driven by two demands: First, the goal was to teach the most relevant analytical skills for solving real-world problems, as collected from our industrial customers through a large survey. The objectives were prioritized and structured to design the seven modules in STIPS.
Second, a growing need for certification, both in industry and academia, gave rise to two-tier exams: If you pass the online exams at the end of each module, you earn an e-badge. Once you have passed the entire STIPS program, you can take a performance-based exam called " JMP Certified Associate: Statistical Thinking for Industrial Problem Solving ".
“ This course is about the application of the scientific method to solve problems and drive improvements. . ”
-Roger Hoerl, PhD., Professor of Statistics at Union College
Who is STIPS for?
The course is free for anyone interested in acquiring practical knowledge in the application of statistics in science, engineering, or in process and quality improvement. STIPS also offers companies an efficient, standard way to train data-driven decision makers within their organizations. Finally, STIPS is an extremely useful course for students, which will help them better solve problems in their future workplaces.
“ STIPS is a very good course. I was happy to have an online course that focused on the important information, at an easy and understandable level. ”
-Andreas Trautmann, Process Specialist, Lonza
How does the STIPS course work?
The online course "Statistical Thinking for Industrial Problem Solving" (also known as STIPS) has seven modules, totaling around 30 hours of self-paced learning. Each module includes instructional videos, JMP demos, questions, and exercises. STIPS also offers students the opportunity to practice newly learned techniques. The exercises can be done using a browser to access JMP Pro in the cloud or using JMP locally after downloading the data sets.
“ STIPS is excellent for balancing statistical theory and the practical use of analytics to solve common problems that many organizations face on a daily basis. ”
-Pete Cannon, QMS Director and Quality Engineer, NVIDIA
How can STIPS be used?
STIPS is very flexible, so the course can be used in various ways. It can be used as a stand-alone course to learn applied statistics, as the statistical concepts taught can be applied in JMP or other software.
STIPS can also be used as training for people with or without statistical knowledge, to learn how to operate the program efficiently. STIPS helps JMP users get the most out of their investment in the software.
The modules in STIPS can also be used to support a company's internal training plan in several ways:
- Before starting the course, students can take selected modules to align previous knowledge (for example, suggest the "Correlation and Regression" module to recap basic knowledge in statistics).
- During the course, modules in STIPS can be used as assignments, with optional tracking checked with the electronic badges that STIPS offers you, as you take the final exam for each module online.
- After the course, students can learn about other relevant topics that are not included in the standard curriculum. Most importantly, all modules help students become more decisive with decisions made from data in their workplaces.
